Preferably, you should update to the most recent version that your Mac is capable of supporting; these older macOS versions aren't getting security updates any more. The 10.13.6 version you're using hasn't got a security update in more than 3 years, which is not awesome.
As far as still being able to play the games already downloaded, I would think we can still play them, they just won't be updated or have Steam cloud saves.
So If you ever have to erase/install your HD I'm kinda doubting Steam will have the older versions to download again, game or the Steam App? You better have a HD backup plan.
From what I read we can still use the Steam app for a while after but it just won't be updated anymore and when Steam updates their site the old Steam versions will not be compatible with the newer Steam app or site.
It has to do with the old 32 bit games and MacOS 10.15 and above not supporting 32 bit anything. Steam even said they will start NOT accepting 32 bit games on their site after that.
Steam uses a part of Google Chrome to run the Steam app, when they update it to the new version it wont be compatible with 32 bit games, apps or Mac OS 10.14 or older.
You know, I've the same problem as you with my old 2010 iMac.
I'm also on "High Sierra" 10.13.6 and I can't even download "Mojave" if I want to be able to continue to play my games, but especially my three GRIDs ! ("racer GRID" is on the Dock among my favorite apps, but not on STEAM....)
I wrote to Bryn from Feral Interactive when I saw with stupor this red message on the top of the screen, a very nice guy to who I ask sometimes for help.
Apparently we'll be able to continue playing GRID 2 and other games on our OS "High Sierra", but we'll no longer benefit from STEAM uploads, which will mean less security.
(I love participating in the Global Challenge every week and that's what worries me most after this date, not especially the STEAM uploads, because playing WSR hasn't been fun for a long time...)
Below here's a part of his response to my email, with the links he attached to his message about this problem.
Good luck YellowCaballeroFan, and thanks to those who replied to him !

Although Steam will no longer update on macOS High Sierra & Mojave after February 15th 2024, you will still be able to launch Steam and play your games on macOS High Sierra.
Please note that the Steam version on February 15th 2024 will be the final iteration of this application on High Sierra & Mojave.
If you require any further assistance with this we'd suggest contacting Steam directly:

Apparently you misread my long message. (Which is understandable, given its length....)
You say you're still on "High Sierra" 10.13.6 like me.
I don't know what "Gmod" is, so I can only talk about my three GRIDs and a dozen of HOGs. (95% of my others HOGs are on Game Manager or MacGames and my "Racer GRID" is an app outside of STEAM...)
If the game you're talking about isn't heavier than GRID 2 or GRID Autosport, you can continue to play it while staying on your "High Sierra" 10.13.6.
That's what I understood in the response that Bryn from Feral Interactive gave me, as well as the explanations found in his first link.
On the other hand we will no longer benefit from new STEAM improvements, at our own risk in the event of problems with our games.
But if you're too worried, ask Bryn for more precise explanations by email to this address :
support@feralinteractive.com
Let's wait until February 15, 2024 to see if our games still work on our OS "High Sierra" 10.13.6, which I hope.
Good luck YCF !
I'm 65 years old and visually I can no longer play games whose images flash and move too quickly. (And I HATE violent games with guns and fighting....)
About "High Sierra", what I don't understand is that Bryn from Feral Interactive says in his email that I will be able to continue playing GRID 2 from the 15/02/24, while the red message at the top of our Macs clearly states that STEAM will stop WORKING on our OS 10.13.6.
So I don't understand how I'm going to continue playing GRID 2 if STEAM no longer opens !
Bryn was only talking about future STEAM uploads that we won't have, while the red STEAM message is perfectly clear and much more worrying.
I will write to STEAM to find out whether or not we can continue to play our games, and how, if we no longer have access to their platform !
I will keep you informed YCF.
Bye !
Hi srp16265 !
Yes, the STEAM message is very clear.
For my case, my 2010 iMac is so old that I can't update it to the next OS version which is "Mojave".
Anyway, STEAM and "GRID 2" will not even work on "Mojave" !
But as "Racer GRID" (The first version of this game...) works without STEAM and is placed on my Dock with its own icon among my favorite apps, maybe that I'll manage to play my others STEAM games as I do with it....
Hi YCF,
As promised, I'm here to give you some news about what's going to happen to us from 02/15/24 with our High Sierra and our 32-bit games.
First of all, I wanted to apologize for not having responded to your astonishment when you mentioned the name of your game, which I didn't know !
As I told you, I'm 65 years old, and apart from hyper-famous titles like "Minecraft", "Super Mario" or "Call of Duty", I only know car racing games and HOGs like " Myst” or the “Big Fish Games”. The best ones came out between 2009 and 2014, the following ones are 80% crap.
But let's move on, even I'm far from being a geek and I'm often lost in all this IT mess.
However, I understand that the news are not good, simply because STEAM works with the latest version of Google Chrome !
As it apparently happened before with Snow Leopard, STEAM will no longer open under High Sierra since even Mojave which follows is not compatible. So if like me, with my old 2010 iMac permanently stuck in High Sierra, you can't upgrade to at least Catalina 10.15, it's over for us !
In addition, games are now released in 64 bits, so our old 32-bit games which will surely never be updated will no longer work.
But why the guy from Feral Interactive told me that I will be able to continue playing on High Sierra after 02/15/24 without any problem ?!? (Except that I'll not have the updates....)
So I've written directly to STEAM to ask them to tell me once and for all whether YES or NO, we will be able to continue playing our old games after this date.
Alas I doubt their response, since what they wrote in their link but especially their message in red at the top of our screens and its diabolical countdown are explicit enough !
Damn, I really didn't expect to receive such news....
And even if I bought the latest, most expensive and most powerful Mac, anyway ALL the most famous car games like "Assetto Corsa", "Forza Horizon", "Gran Turismo", "Dirt Rally" or “Need for Speed” are for PC or consoles.
Bye YCF, happy Christmas and good luck to you, despite this f...... news.
What I understood, is that Steam and games won't have updates on old systems, but the games should still work after the date. I hope seriously. If the game works in offline mode, we don't need a connection to steam server ...
On my Mac I have a dual boot. Mojave for old games that I don't want to loose : Grid, Dirt 2/3/4, Dirt Rally, F1 2017 and many others. And Ventura for recent software.
If Steam do something to block 32 bits games launch on our OSes, it would the worst way of taking care of customers. Hope we can keep them a long time and that it will be retro gaming in 10-20 years ;)
