Unable to Start Steam on a Macbook Pro M2 Running Ventura
My mom just got a new MacBook Pro M2. I was trying to help her get Steam up and running so she could try a few games I think she might like.

The application installed without any issue as best as I can tell. Steam shows up within Applications.

Trying to start Steam from the Applications menu seems to do nothing.

So I opened a terminal and went into /Applications/Steam/Content/MacOS and tried running the shell script I found and the executable. Both came back with "bad CPU type in executable" error.

I think the shell script is trying to run the executable. And the executable is of the Mach-O x86_64 type. I gather this is a 64-bit Intel executable.

After doing some research it sounds like there is something called Rosetta 2 that's supposed to allow Intel executables to run on the new Apple Silicon chips.

I gather that when you first attempt to run an Intel executable on this OS, you should be asked if you want Rosetta 2 installed. This doesn't seem to be happening.

I found a command that's supposed to allow you to install Rosetta 2 but that doesn't seem to work.
The command is:
softwareupdate --install-rosetta
This comes back with some confusing output:
Package Authoring Error Package reference com.apple.pkg.RosettaUpdateAuto is missing installKBytes attribute Install of Rosetta 2 finished successfully

But I don't think it actually got installed. I still get the bad CPU type error when trying to run the executable. And I don't see an option in "get info" to tell the OS to run the app under Rosetta. Sounds like that should be there with Rosetta installed.

Hey Davidian,

/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

good luck!

Thanks for this. I had actually already tried it with that agree to license option too. Didn't make a difference.

I ended up opening a support case with Valve and they were able to help.

So, my mom had an old MacBook Air with an Intel CPU before she just got this new M2 Pro. We transferred everything from that old Mac to the new one. I think Steam was copied over as a part of that transfer. And I think the Intel executable got transferred too.

What ended up working was uninstalling Steam and completely uninstalling and removing it. This isn't as simple as a normal uninstall on a Mac.

Steam support gave me this link: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/30EB-87BF-531F-512D

After that we installed it from scratch again and it just worked. And she's good to go.

Thanks for coming back… at least the 2nd case of "migration trouble" I've read here… will keep this in memory… ;-)

BTW: if she is a little bit into poker:

You don't need real money for this. have fun!
