Setup:
* Macbook Pro, M1 Max, macOS Ventura 13.1
* Primary display: laptop screen
* Secondary display: external monitor, connected with USB-C
* Layout: primary display on the bottom, secondary display on top
Steps to reproduce:
* Connect Macbook to monitor using USB-C
* Open Steam
* Steam opens on laptop screen, the primary display
* Attempt to drag the Steam window from the laptop screen to the external monitor (secondary) by grabbing the title bar with the mouse and dragging it over
Observed:
* The Steam window will move, until it reaches the edge of the laptop screen where it borders on the second monitor.
* If I swipe up on the trackpad with three fingers, then drag the Steam window over to the secondary display and then three-finger swipe down again, the Steam window *is* displayed on the second monitor but any interaction with the window will immediately throw it down to the primary display again.
* At some point the menu in the Mac menu bar stopped working, but I'm not sure it is related.
Expected:
* With a recent, previous version of Steam, I was able to simply drag the window over to my other monitor and interact with it there.
Notes:
* Resizing the window is not an issue.
* The same issue occurs for the Friends floating window
Things I've tried:
* Open and close Big Picture mode, no effect
* Looked in Steam settings for display related things but didn't see anything I thought could be directly related. I ended up not changing anything there, but this is what was enabled when I had a look: "Enable smooth scrolling in web views", "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" and "Enable hardware video decoding".
1. Start the game
2. Wait for the game to start on your primary monitor
3. Three-finger swipe up to see an overview of all your windows and desktops
4. In my situation, the game runs on a different desktop window on the primary monitor. Click and drag that desktop to the desktop bar on the secondary monitor.
5. Three-finger swipe down to go back to work
For me, the game window/desktop I dragged over is now full screen on my secondary monitor.
So, theoretical temporary fix (have not tried this yet):
- Connect second screen
- Go to System Settings > Displays
- Check if the screen you want to use is there
- Click on the Arrange button
- Arrange the screens so the second screen is not positioned above the main screen
- Click Done
- Now try to drag Steam to the second screen
The workaround in my previous reply may also still work, I have not tried it recently but I'm planning to play some games over Christmas.
The problem is, once you move the client window to the "bottom" monitor in a "vertical" arrangement you then won't be able to move the client back to the top window. No matter what the display arrangement is (with 2 displays anyway) you simply cannot move the Steam client window to a position that exceeds the pixel count to the bottom of the status bar of the primary display. Even if you have two different resolution/aspect ratio monitors arranged horizontally. In that scenario you'll notice that on the other display you reach a point where you can't move the Steam client window any further up along the Y axis to the top of the display, this limit happens to be the pixel row that is the bottom of the status bar on the primary display. It's been a problem since at least May or June when I first reported it, must either be a tough one to fix or they don't see macOS as a priority. Assuming the latter since it's probably an extremely low user base compared to Windows or Linux, Linux being SteamOS for Steam Deck as well.
Does my workaround from the 6th of August work for you btw?
I also have an SFF desktop with a 3080 so I have just ended up using that all the time and abandoned gaming on the mbp, it's just annoying. Would have been nice to just not use the desktop unless it was some game that needed the 3080 (it's still way faster than the M1 Max).
