Same problem and impossible to play on the second monitor ! :-(

I have a similar issue after I updated my client today.

Setup:
* Macbook Pro, M1 Max, macOS Ventura 13.1
* Primary display: laptop screen
* Secondary display: external monitor, connected with USB-C
* Layout: primary display on the bottom, secondary display on top

Steps to reproduce:
* Connect Macbook to monitor using USB-C
* Open Steam
* Steam opens on laptop screen, the primary display
* Attempt to drag the Steam window from the laptop screen to the external monitor (secondary) by grabbing the title bar with the mouse and dragging it over

Observed:
* The Steam window will move, until it reaches the edge of the laptop screen where it borders on the second monitor.
* If I swipe up on the trackpad with three fingers, then drag the Steam window over to the secondary display and then three-finger swipe down again, the Steam window *is* displayed on the second monitor but any interaction with the window will immediately throw it down to the primary display again.
* At some point the menu in the Mac menu bar stopped working, but I'm not sure it is related.

Expected:
* With a recent, previous version of Steam, I was able to simply drag the window over to my other monitor and interact with it there.

Notes:
* Resizing the window is not an issue.
* The same issue occurs for the Friends floating window

Things I've tried:
* Open and close Big Picture mode, no effect
* Looked in Steam settings for display related things but didn't see anything I thought could be directly related. I ended up not changing anything there, but this is what was enabled when I had a look: "Enable smooth scrolling in web views", "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" and "Enable hardware video decoding".

I have the same exact mac and os. I have the same exact issues. This also affects the launch of Path of Exile. I can only play on the laptop's monitor. If I drag the window over to my 32" external monitor, the input mapping for the screen gets all messed up, and I can't click on anything.

The only way I managed to move the Steam client to the second display is via the Rectangle MacOS app. It has an option to move any window to another display and map this to a command.

If you want to play a game on your secondary monitor, I managed to do it with this workaround:

1. Start the game
2. Wait for the game to start on your primary monitor
3. Three-finger swipe up to see an overview of all your windows and desktops
4. In my situation, the game runs on a different desktop window on the primary monitor. Click and drag that desktop to the desktop bar on the secondary monitor.
5. Three-finger swipe down to go back to work

For me, the game window/desktop I dragged over is now full screen on my secondary monitor.

In https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/2/6516193260169957287/ I read that the issue with not being able to move to another monitor only occurs if the second screen's orientation/arrangement is positioned above the main screen.

So, theoretical temporary fix (have not tried this yet):

- Connect second screen
- Go to System Settings > Displays
- Check if the screen you want to use is there
- Click on the Arrange button
- Arrange the screens so the second screen is not positioned above the main screen
- Click Done
- Now try to drag Steam to the second screen

The workaround in my previous reply may also still work, I have not tried it recently but I'm planning to play some games over Christmas.

The problem is, once you move the client window to the "bottom" monitor in a "vertical" arrangement you then won't be able to move the client back to the top window. No matter what the display arrangement is (with 2 displays anyway) you simply cannot move the Steam client window to a position that exceeds the pixel count to the bottom of the status bar of the primary display. Even if you have two different resolution/aspect ratio monitors arranged horizontally. In that scenario you'll notice that on the other display you reach a point where you can't move the Steam client window any further up along the Y axis to the top of the display, this limit happens to be the pixel row that is the bottom of the status bar on the primary display. It's been a problem since at least May or June when I first reported it, must either be a tough one to fix or they don't see macOS as a priority. Assuming the latter since it's probably an extremely low user base compared to Windows or Linux, Linux being SteamOS for Steam Deck as well.

I can understand why it does not have priority. Perhaps now that Apple Silicon is gaining graphics power and the Gaming Toolkit is introduced, they will reconsider the priorities at some point in the future. It's partly a chicken and egg problem. If you don't solve some of these issues then no Mac user will enjoy gaming with Steam, and if no Mac user enjoys gaming with Steam then these issues will never become a priority.

Does my workaround from the 6th of August work for you btw?

Yeah I had done that in the past to run some games on my external monitor, it's just a pain since that's not typically the way I use my mbp. Some games also just let you select in the game which monitor to run the game on, which helps. The most annoying part is just not letting me move the window around at will hah.

I also have an SFF desktop with a 3080 so I have just ended up using that all the time and abandoned gaming on the mbp, it's just annoying. Would have been nice to just not use the desktop unless it was some game that needed the 3080 (it's still way faster than the M1 Max).

Today I tried to move Steam to my second screen which is positioned above my primary screen, and it worked! When starting a game, it still ended up on the primary screen but I was able to move it with the workaround described above.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
