steam disconnects my controller on my mac when I launch it
I've been using steam on various macs with various versions of mac os for over a decade with no issues ever. I've been primarily using a logitech f310 usb controller and it's always worked effortlessly. but for some reason when I launch steam now, it disconnects the controller and I can't get it to work. the controller disappears from the system settings and won't show up again until steam has quit and I disconnect it from usb and reconnect.

I've read through a bunch of threads about this on here, but can't find a similar situation to mine.

currently running mac os 13.1 with the latest version of steam client for mac on an intel macbook pro. a couple of days ago this wasn't an issue and I was playing various games with no trouble.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I'm on an intel iMac running Monterey using an f310 and am having the same issues. Not sure when it started but I first noticed it with Dolphin (Gamecube/Wii emulator). Tonight I noticed the same thing was happening when I launched STEAM. Not sure if its related (or if STEAM even uses SDL) but browsing through the Dolphin forums it may be a bug in SDL.

I use openemu to emulate games and my f310 has been working fine since this issue started. The controller also works fine with epic games launcher.

I hope they fix this bug soon.

I found that if I open system settings and go to game controllers while steam client is open at the same time and then connect and reconnect the f310 several times it will occasionally connect and stay connected. That's only worked a handful of times though.

Following up... same problem also with f310.
Found this thread in GH on how to connect it from the start and looks like I was asked to provide Steam with accessibility to control my computer... but still wont work

UPDATE:
I think I may be on to something... I can get it to "recognize" the control as Xbox/Apple but still wont work.

I followed some steps from here:
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-game-controller-not-working-in-steam

to configure "Steam Big Picture"
-Go to Settings>Controller settings
-Enable support for the controller there

It will most likely show the controller is not detected, disconnect it while on this screen and connect it again while pressing mode (the mode light should come on)

Exit that screen and go back to it and it would now have detected an "Xbox controller" and an "Apple controller"

Then from theLibrary within "Big Picture" go to the game page and navigate to the options (menu on the left) to select the input for this game and can choose between the "detected controllers"

After starting a game, I can see the gamepad being "loaded" but still wont work...

Maybe give these steps a try on your side and see if you can find something I may be missing to go around this bug

You mentioned you pressed the mode button and the light should come on. If you press it again does it go off? Launching steam effectively kills my controller. IE: If the light is off when I launch steam pressing the mode button has no affect. (light stays off). If I launch steam with the mode button lit the mode button still has no affect and stays lit. Its like the controller is locked up until i close steam and disconnect/reconnect from usb. Even after closing steam the gamepad won't work with any other software until i disconnect/reconnect.

If I try connecting while holding down the mode button, the mode button just leaves the light on and it won't turn off.

The best fix I've found for now is to open steam and go to game controllers on system settings at the same time. I then connect and disconnect the controller until the mode light will stitch on & off correctly, which is about 2-3 attempts. Then everything works fine and I can play any game withe the f310

Latest update to Steam (15 March) seems to have fixed the problem:)
