Controllers and Steam for Mac
Any Suggestions? I have tried 3 controllers and none of them work for my Steam Games. My wired controller worked in Obduction on the Epic Store. And native games work fine, but Steam... nope.

Strange... I just got my M3 powerbook and the games i mentioned all work now with my xbox controller. I did turn off and on steam input etc... but perhaps I had a pref file that was corrupt on the old machine I Don't know but i'm gaming now!

It's good that everything is working now! As I can see, many people offer different solutions, and still, you have to play around to fix your particular problem.

yeah i still don't have full control in everything but still the games i play on my main machine the Mac I do. Everything else is played on my alienware and that's ALL I do on it cuz I don't want it to get an STD LOL!

Hello. I'm not to sure how to do this fix "allow steam access to accessibility" i see accessibility in system but dont' know how to add steam to it would someone be so kind as to tell me how to do this?

Thanks in advance!!!

I think you better start a separate thread for this. But you can try the following steps:
Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and select ""System Preferences"" from the dropdown menu.
In the System Preferences window, find and click on ""Security & Privacy"". This is where you can adjust settings related to the security of your Mac, including accessibility permissions.
On the left-hand side of the Privacy tab, you'll see a list of features. Scroll through and select ""Accessibility"". This section allows you to manage which applications can control your Mac.
Back in the Security & Privacy window, ensure that the checkbox next to Steam is ticked. This grants Steam the necessary accessibility permissions.

Thank you for this

I am having this problem. None of the controllers I've tried will work with any of the games I've bought except Disco Elysium. Got a Macbook Pro M2. I've tried every tutorial, hint, tip, setting out there and... NOTHING.
I cana navigate steam with the controller no problem. I can run the diagnostic that confirms the controller is working an present. I've checked that the games support the controllers (I've tried Xbox One, Dual Shock and Dual Sense) but all have the same issue. It doesn't work. At all. Except for Disco Elysium.
I'm losing my rag with it now because how can a controller work in Steam, be supported by the game and still just not work?
For example, 60 Seconds Reatomised, acknowledges the controller is there, I even set the controls to gamepad, but when I start a game the gamepad doesn't work and when I go back into controls its changed it back to keyboard and mouse.

Most games take advantage of Steam Input and says they support controller, however on some mac (mostly apple silicon if I remember) steam input doesn't work properly so controller does nothing on those games (at least in my case).
Some games support controllers "natively", but that's a minority.
You can still try to use steam input by letting steam access to accessibility, going into big picture -> settings -> controller settings and by selecting some of the settings depending on your controller

It's because Steam uses api from 2013, what was deprecated in 2018, and already removed.

Most Steam games on Mac are poor regarding support for controllers (I bought wireless PS5 and X-Box controllers to try to get over this). No Mans's Sky and Baldurs Gate 3 seem to be among the few that have done it well and differentiate between the two controller types. Pretty crappy that you get a lot of info saying they support your controller, but rarely do. There might be something on the setting on my side that is wrong, but if I boot up those two games, no ridiculous workarounds are necessary, and anyway, workarounds, tutorials on how to get them to work, never work down to the game and if they can be arsed to get it right for the customer IMHO and experience.

Another thing to bear in mind is to turn on your controller before you launch the game. Some won't work if you turn on the controller after you launch.

100% correct with this one. I usually have it on before I start steam and all the games I have that are Mac compatible work just fine.

I second this, I’ve been trying every method that i’ve come across from this thread and other sites but nothing seems to work. I’m also on a M2 MacBook Pro. I remember that I somehow got a dualshock 4 controller to connect but I can’t use that one currently. I tried connecting my xbox one x controller and i’m running into the same problem. Sorry I couldn’t be of help but i’m hoping someone will have some insight…
