PS4 controller issues in macOS
Trying to set up my Macbook with a mini eGPU for some casual couch gaming on my TV but having an issue...

I'm having issues connecting mine via BT in Steam. As soon as I tick "PS4 support" or whatever it is it loses connection, I power it off and on again and it doesnt pop back up. With the tick box not connected it works in some games but in others it behaves a bit odd (In Metro my view is of the ceiling and I have to hold a button down to look down and keep it held).

Anyone experienced the same? Any ideas of a solution? I've found some older posts about not ticking that checkbox but wondering if there have been any updates?

Same problem here. I’m ready to purchase a new controller.

I'm glad its not just me - thought I was going crazy. I bought an Xbox one X controller which also connects over BT (the latest model ones do, the older ones do not, make sure you get the right one) but it's still not perfect in all games. I'm testing all games in my Library and currently its around 50% work perfectly, neither of the Metro games work with it.

I may have to revert to using my steam controller.

My original set up was two wireless Xbox 360 controllers and the Microsoft transmitter. Worked great for years. Then Apple updates their OS and now getting kernel panic attacks is a real issue.

The driver developer has removed wireless support until the driver (usb one, not the controller one) is rewritten (which is probably never going to happen).

I’m using the latest version of the driver that still supports wireless.

I was ready to ditch all of that and go all in on PS 4 controllers since I knew Steam supported them. Unfortunately Steam has done a terrible job of this and made the experience dreadful.

I’ve reconnected all my Microsoft devices and I’m just diligent with turn them off when not in use to avoid kernel panic attacks.

You might already know all of this already, I’m just putting it out there for people that might be reading along.

I am going to continue testing my PS 4 controller and try and figure out how to make it stable but this might be futile since Steam has done such a poor job of supporting the device.

Let me know if you make any progress with getting your PS 4 controller to work good.

Well, Steam updated the device driver today. So far no (real) issues. I’ll post here again if something comes up.

I’m still not ditching the Xbox controllers for now.

Hey thanks for the replies and the info - how do you go about using the latest drivers? Sorry if thats a daft question. Are they just baked into Steam controller support? I'd love to just use the PS4 controller. I was running tests last week and about half of my Library had proper controller support (X Box one X).

I just launched Steam and it said it needed to update the controller device drivers. The installed was a separate install like what you would get from a .dmg, I just did the install and was well.

Not sure if you can download this separately from Steam, I don’t see why not.

Yep, found the same on second boot of Steam, thanks for the reply though! Still having plenty of issues, it almost feels like they don't test these things very much...

What issues? I might be able to help with my limited experience with all of this.
