ps3 controllers are recognized by steam, although there are compatibility issues with some games (xbox controllers are generally better supported). its still possible to make your ps3 controller work with almost any game though.

ps3 controllers work with bluetooth, so all you have to do is pair your controller with your mac. its actually quite simple...there are many tutorials on youtube that provide you with step-by-step instructions. like this one:

Thank you for replying.. my problem is that i can connect the ps3 controller and it works on the meanu of steam but when i go into any game it doesnt seem to work, i was just wondering if im doing something wrong and thats the reason it doesnt work or if it just isnt possible for it to play with games on steam. I have an xbox controller but i dont have a reciever to be able to connect it to the mac and as i am short of funds atm i would prefer to use the PS controller.
