This game requires steam to run

I'm trying to make desktop short cuts of the games in my library and swap out the icons with more pleasing to look at variants that other people have made. I have found some really nice ones for KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Dragon Age 2, Bioshock, Civilization 5 ect. However when I go to run the game it gives me an error message saying this game needs steam to run.

These are steam shortcuts moved to my accounts application directory from the desktop. Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure steam is opened and you are logged in. You can then use other ways like through desktop to play the game. Games will not work period unless you are logged in. It needs to know who you are through log in for steam games to work.

I found the issue. If you open the game and then pin the program to the dock and then cloce and reopen it the game will not start. You have to create a shortcut from within Steam.

I have found that if Steam is closed it will open up. Although I wish there was a way to make it open to a icon on the top bar and stay out of the way. I also very much dislike being spammed about new games every time I want to play a game.
