Disk Write Error
Hi Everyone,

I have used steam for a number of years on mac without any issues however on this years football manager 2023, when an update is available through steam, it downloads, tries to patch then appears with ‘disk write error’

The only way around it is to uninstall steam and then reinstall steam. I have tried loads of tutorials online and changed the write permissions.

Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have a solution?

You have to allow Steam full access to your hard drive. To do this go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Full disk Access > Turn on Steam to allow access to disk

If you're experiencing a "disk write error" on Steam when trying to update Football Manager 2023, there are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:

Check your disk space. Make sure that you have enough free space on your hard drive to download and install the update.

Verify your game files. To do this, go to your Steam library, right-click on Football Manager 2023, select "Properties", go to the "Local Files" tab, and click on "Verify Integrity of Game Files". This will check the game files for any errors or missing files and may resolve the issue.

Check your file permissions. Make sure that your account has permission to write to the folder where the game is installed. You can check and change file permissions by right-clicking on the game folder, selecting "Get Info", and adjusting the permissions under "Sharing & Permissions".

Disable your antivirus software. Your antivirus software may be blocking the update process or interfering with Steam's ability to write to your disk. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software and see if the issue persists.

Reinstall Steam. If none of the above steps work, you may want to try reinstalling Steam to see if that resolves the issue.

If you continue to experience the "disk write error" after trying these steps, you may want to contact Steam Support for further assistance. They can help you troubleshoot the issue and may be able to provide additional support or solutions.

Neo, you are the One. That worked for me as well. I also reverted back the setting after the Steam client updated No Man's Sky successfully.

I mean, if Steam wanted to install a malware now it succeeded. But still. XD

Thanks. Cheers mate!

Had the same problem with NMS, instead of "Full Disc Access", I have enabled "App Management" for Steam.

Also suddenly started getting this error, but seemingly just for No Man's Sky (I don't play Football Manager). Other stuff will update just fine. What's going on that means some games need full disk access for Steam?

Was also having issues updating American Truck Simulator until I found this comment and it worked. Not sure why no one else has mentioned it until a randomly found discussion board comes in. This is the way.

SAME! i tried to re-install Don’t Starve Together but the disk write error happens.

I'm experiencing the same issue with Don't Starve Together.
Attempted: Clear Download Cache; Granted Full disc Access.
Uninstalled DST and Steam multiple times to no avail.
I played DST on this machine about a week ago without problems.
I'm suspecting a MacOS Ventura update might be the issue. I might have done an update since last time I played. I'm 100% sure though. The current version number is 13.5.2.

I had the Full access permission already checked but what worked for me was delete SteamLibray folder from my external drive (I was using a external SSD) and go to Preferences > Storage > Click on Macinthosh HD > Add drive. Adding my SSD again resolved the problem.
