Periodic hitching/freezing of Steam client - M1 Max, Monterey 12.6
Hey guys, just got a 16" M1 Max a few weeks ago and installed Steam on it. From the beginning I've been experiencing this weird behavior where the Steam app will become totally unresponsive, usually after just switching over to it from another window. After a few seconds, it becomes responsive again and then essentially works just fine until the next time I tab away and tab back.

Perhaps to give some more insight, if you're on the download tab, for example, when you switch over to the Steam window it'll show you the frozen state of the download as it was a few minutes ago. Then a few seconds later it'll unfreeze and suddenly update to the current status and you've downloaded several more gigs since then.

Games work just fine, and I have no issues throughout the rest of my desktop, it's just the steam app itself doing this.

Anyone else experiencing this?

You're not alone, and I'm not sure when this behavior was introduced. It seems like it's been like this for a while now. Essentially to 'unlock', I usually go to Library->Home, and then it becomes responsive again. Generally, you'll find that Steam for macOS runs slowly and has some problems that the other platforms don't have which is a real shame. They don't seem to care that much as long as it works minimally as a store and launcher.

Is there any response from the steam devs on this issue? I've noticed it for a while now but it's starting to annoying me more and more.

My steam usually starts to freeze when I open "news" of the game, especially if there are videos in them - if lags very bad. Viewing same game page in browser is blazing fast though.

Same here on M1 MacBook Air. It feels like the Steam client is getting progressively worse on macs, or at least those that have Apple Silicon. As well as this issue, the client is generally very laggy, Steam Cloud save conflicts occur frequently, and it's impossible to watch videos in full screen mode. Plus a load of other minor annoyances and bugs.

Nothing from the big wigs at steam? Well, I have the M4 pro and even the stream client freezes there as well. Come on. Over 2 years and zero is being done about this?
