Steam requires that 'Steam' be on a case-insensitive filesystem / Steam is damaged errors.
I have been attempting to install steam on my friend's MacBook Air and have ran into two main issues that I can't seem to find a solution for online.
(My friend is using a MacBook Air 2013 running macOS Big Sur 11.6.1)

The first error is reported when I attempt to install steam normally. As in downloading 'steam.dmg' from https://store.steampowered.com/about/. Opening the file, dragging the steam icon into the applications folder, and then running steam. The error reported is:

" Steam requires that '/Users/apple/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS' be on a case-insensitive filesystem. "

My next thought was running steam off of a usb drive, as the usb drive would be a case-insensitive filesystem. And that is just what we did. However, this reported a new error:

""Steam" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash. "

I have tried a number of different ideas that all come back to the same two errors, I am now asking the steam forums for help.

You formatted the osx drive "incorrecty".... as far as "steam" goes

you *might* be able to fix it depending on your space available

open disk utility
go to partition.
you will see "APFS","APFS encrypted","AFPS case sensitive"," AFPS case sensitive encrypted"

what it means it the disk area you are trying to store "steam" on, has been formatted to :

"AFPS case sensitive" OR " AFPS case sensitive encrypted"

The fact that steam requires "case insensitive" is just F***♥♥♥ garbage.. programming.

it means that when they save a file out as "BOB" or "bob" they are the SAME!!

apple allows "Bob","BOB","bOb" to be comepletely different files.

The FAST way to fix this is to make a partition, with basic "AFPS", then stick steam & all it's ♥♥♥♥♥ there....

Now.... for the critical problem...

IF Steam puts files in the system area ... you are F**ed , because that is where you OSX
system is stored & if it has been set to CASE SENSITIVE, it means you have to "backup" all your data and erase the computer & reformat the base file system.(it's not a big deal on mac, just time consuming)

but if the steam client runs but games don't, then it is easier, you just point the storage area to a
CASE INSENSITIVE area

oh.. and your SECOND problem is the same.. because you can bet the dumb ass steam programmers have saved parts of the steam files as " My BIG letters", but b then loaded the parts as "my big letters", but since apple treats them differently, it says "nope sorry aint got that file"

and steam whines .... i'm broke, the files are missing, instead of saying .. sorry my programmers are garbage and undisciplined...
