macOS Monterey 12.3.1 (Build 21E258) Steam CAN'T be opened after updating to the latest macOS!!!
The latest official OS Apple was released on Thursday, March 31st. I'm a normal mac user that always seeks to update to the latest official OS as soon as it releases. Before yesterday's update, I can open the Steam client and play my games as normal. After installing the OS update, I can't open the Steam client. I assume the problem is from updating the OS and some incompatibility.

When I click on the Steam icon, the updating window shows up for a second, then it disappears. And the Steam icon remains "jiggling" for a very long time, and finally, it says "not responding" and I have to force quit the client.

I tried to search the community discussion, haven't seen any posts about this issue, except one person who mentioned the "atsd" font issue after updating to macOS 12.3.1. I find a similar anomaly that when I try to launch the client, it failed, then I force quit it. But there's a high CPU demand process called "atsd" showing up, and it takes 99% of CPU process. And I can ONLY get rid of this weird process by rebooting my MacBook. I have no idea why this happens, I hope the developer team could solve this problem ASAP since I can only launch my games through the Steam client.

My hardware is a 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 from 2020, with 16G memory and 512G storage.

Hello there. I guess I didn't run into this one. I am on Mac OS Monterey, and just ran the latest 12.3.1 update today (April 1st and no, this is not an April Fools thing). I can still run the latest Steam client with no issues.

On a Mac Mini M1 from 2020 with 16GB RAM and 2TB HD.

Thank you for your comment. I'm still not sure why this is happening to me. I've tried every method I can find online, including deleting the Steam client and doing a clean reinstall. Still, it doesn't solve the problem. Also, I've reported this issue to the Steam customer support team. Hopefully, they could figure something out.

Problem solved!!! I looked into another discussion post, I shut down my mac and run into the safe mode. Steam can be opened normally, then I shut down and boot up in normal mode, and everything works just fine. My guess for the reason for this issue is that I haven't totally shut down my mac for a long time. And I think the key factor is that I never uncheck the box "Reopen windows when logging back in", even after an OS update! The system will automatically reload everything if you don't uncheck the box. I guess there could be some glitches happening to the CPU processes or the system after a long period of continuous use. Anyway, thank god this got resolved, time to enjoy my games xD.
Same thing just randomly happened to me, can confirm that booting up the Mac in safe mode, opening Steam, and then shutting down and booting normally fixed it for me. Think it's some sort of corrupt font cache that booting up into safe mode fixes. Thanks a lot!
