To be sure, Google it, how this is done in detail. No worries, it's easy. Maybe you need to initialize in one or the other Format, like "HFS+" to make steam happy, but don't use "NTFS" on a Mac, as you won't be able to save data on a Mac.
Mac can read NTFS disks, like PCs can, but Mac can NOT write (= save data}) to NTFS disks.
By using this Mac Disk Utility, you are preparing a Harddisk to the technical things, needed by a Mac to use the disk... but all data on the external disk will be deleted by this process... So take care, not to delete your data accidentally.
After that, test the external disk by copying some files manually to it, then delete them. If this also works, you are ready to go.
Now you need to add another library to your steam client, so it can store games also to your external disk. Maybe also Google this before doing it.
