Mac Silicon M1 Big Sur Controller Support Workaround
As I'm sure anyone on Big Sur who like to play games with a controller are well aware controllers no longer work with steam. Steam tries to install a driver for controller input but the installation fails.

There is now a workaround for this issue on non-M1 Silicon Macs - see link below - but no fix in sight for M1's,

Steam are aware of the issue, but yesterdays Steam update did not fix the issue, none of the beta releases have solved the problem either and Steam support won't provide any information on timeline for fix.

I was really looking forward to using this new super speedy Mac for gaming - but it looks like Steam just don't care.

Does anyone know of a workaround for using a PS4 Dual Shock or Nintendo Pro Controller for input with a Steam game, without using the actual steam input extension - i.e key mapping?

If we don't get a solution by January 2022, I will no longer purchase anything from Valve.
Not working on 11.3 for me either.
Frustrating problem that is not really disclosed anywhere. You only really find out after you buy the controller :(
I'm realizing not everyone in this thread may know this, but controllers DO work for Steam games thanks to Apple. You just need to disable Steam Input in the Controller settings for each game in your library that you use a controller with.

The big persistent issue is remote play doesn't work. Steam MUST have its controller drivers installed for that to work. As of now, that feature is completely broken on macOS 11+.

The Xbox Series X controller (e.g. Xbox Carbon controllers) does work in general on an M1, but doesn't work with Steam's emulation. Nor does it work with the vast majority of games. It is also not well mapped to the normal Xbox controller. Get an 8BitDo or Steelseries if you have an M1. Or you will not get most games working.
same here. it wont change since i found the STEAM INPUT problem, it has been a long while!!
macbook m1 16gb, dualshock 4, mac os big sur 11.5.2
it turned out to make the controller work
what should be done
1.connect it by wire through an adapter
2. go into big picture mode, library, select a game, settings, controller settings, set up input to steam - forcibly turn off
It worked for me, try it too
Is there something we can all do to push Valve to take this seriously and make this fix? It's really frustrating to me that I can't use Remote Play to share games with my friends. I tried putting in a ticket and talking to Steam support, but they didn't have any answers for me. I also tried emailing the guy who's over technical infrastructure to see if he had anything to say, but I haven't heard back. How can we show the company we want this to change? Should we make a petition or something?
Work like a charm for me with this solution directly from Feral games !
My Xbox One controller now works with TR (don't forget to configure it in the sub configuration menu after the game launch)

I'm having the same issues.

M1 iMac 24" OS X 12.0.1 Monterey

Running Steam beta. Could not install gamepad driver that Big Picture asks for. But Steam claims XBox and Generic gamepads are enabled, and in the controller screens for individual games it recognizes that xbox controller is enabled and connected.

XBox Wireless 1708 controller

Evoland - no issues so far, works great
Carrion - no controller detected
Owlboy - no controller detected
Moonlighter - controller detected, but button mapping are all over the place (X for left, B for down, menu for select)
One other thing I noticed though, the steam overlay functionality is overriden by Apple's bluetooth preferences, that wants to load LaunchPad instead when you push it. I've turned that off, and will see if it helps.
Thanks for the tip!! I'm able to use my controller in wired mode now.
A PS5 controller works *wired only* on my M1 Mac running Monterey. I plug the controller into the mac using a USB-C cable. Don't need Big Picture mode or messing with other settings. I've been using it to play Hollow Knight.

Connecting via bluetooth did not work.
I also tried an Xbox Core controller, which did not work.

It also works wired with a PS4 controller! Tried it after seeing this post. Same setup, M1 Mac running Monterey, and bluetooth would not work, wired only (I used a USB cable with USB-C dongle).
It doesn't work for me with the Nintendo Switch pro controller on Monterey (plugged in using USB-C to USB-C)...Would I ever play again? 😭
