Can I play Half-Life 2 on a Mac?
I'm a relative newbie, and I just purchased Half-Life 2. I haven't been on Steam in years, and never with a Mac. Will I be able to play this on my Mac OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6? Help!

I just got Half-Life 2 free for the 20th Anniversary, and I was able to download it still from the Steam Client, on my 2019 Intel Mac running Mac OS Mojave 10.14. Currently the Steam store shows Half-Life 2 as compatible with Windows only, so I hope this answers the question about Mac compatibility in 2024, if anyone else is also interested.

Half-Life 2 is a 32-bit app since it's old, and Mac OS Mojave 10.14 was the last version of Mac OS that supported running 32-bit Mac apps. They only supported running 64-bit Mac apps in later versions of Mac OS, as part of the transition away from Intel CPUs to Apple Silicon. If you have a 2019 or earlier Intel Mac, you can run Mac OS Mojave if you want to play older 32-bit games like this. You can dual boot Mojave (or earlier Mac OS versions like High Sierra 10.13) while also keeping a newer version of Mac OS installed for your other software.

Steam has announced they are dropping support for 32-bit Mac games because current Mac OS doesn't support 32-bit games anymore, so that's why the Steam store now lists Half-Life 2 as compatible with Windows only.

Whether this game will actually run fine in Mojave, I can't say yet, it hasn't finished downloading...

... aaand it crashes during startup. I can't tell whether I have the new updated version released today, or what. It mentioned something about a legacy branch, may have to try that. Another time, when I'm not supposed to be working!

Steam isn't even loading for me anymore on my Mac running Mojave.
