Gamepad driver installer failed Mac OS 11 Beta
A few days ago I upgraded to OS 11 Big Sur Beta. I open Steam with my Nintendo Switch pro controller plugged into the computer and it says "Steam needs to update its gamepad driver, which may require a reboot." Upon going through the mac install steps, I receive a failed installation message. It says "The installer encountered an error that caused this installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." It worked perfectly fine before upgrading to the Beta of Mac OS. Any advice?

Contact support, here: https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpWithCommunityContactSupport

Lots of people are having these issues since the Big Sur update.

same issue here. only disabling SIP works for me, but I am really sceptical of leaving SIP turned off for so long, so I'd rather not.

this also seems to be a Steam issue, as controllers work just fine on Stadia...

I've been having the same issue since I updated my mac to Big Sur, and it looks like I've been having the same problem as a lot of people here. I've contacted Steam support, and he's what I sent them if anyone wants to copy and paste. Hopefully if enough people speak up they'll get on it:

Hello!

My game controller has worked great on all of my purchased games. I've recently updated my Macbook to Big Sur OS 11.1, and I was asked to download the new gamepad driver update (for Steam Link) after I enter Big Picture Mode. After that loads, a prompt tells me that the system needs to update the gampad driver and it may require a reboot. I click OK, and a window opens up to the Steam input installer, I go through all the prompts, and it says the installation was successful. However, during that process another window pops up and directs me to "Please click the "Allow" button to load system software from "Valve corporation" in the Security & Privacy system settings." But the the option to do that on my Security & Privacy system settings window is nowhere to be found. I go back to steam on Big Picture Mode, and I keep getting the same gamepad driver prompt, and the cycle repeats. My controller still works fine when I use it to navigate through the dashboard, but once a game starts playing and I get to the game's menu page, my controller will not work with the game. I've repeated this process several times (I've also restarted Steam and my computer several times) and I've gotten the same result.

From what I've seen there are multiple people on the Steam forum that have the same issue after updating their macOS to Big Sur.

Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Have the same problem with a DualShock 4 controller on Big Sur. Games would not recognize the controller while using it in Big Screen works perfectly (except for the driver pop-up) :(

What worked for me to at least be able to play a game with the controller were two temporary fixes:
Either run a game directly from the library folder with Steam closed
Or override the steam controller input thingy per game: right-click on the game > select ‘Properties’ > select tab ‘Controller’ > and select ‘Disable Steam Input’ from the dropdown

I guess that only works to certain specific games. I have no luck running my games with it :(

I'm playing Dead Cells at macOS Catalina 10.15.7 with Logiteck DUAL ACTION, without any problem. I would like to know if this game works at Big Sur and especially if it has any problem with this gamepad. Anyone try it at Big Sur with Logitech gamepad?

I came up with a pretty simple fix: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/2/3004429475624592660/

Same problem. Steam support says that they’re able to reproduce it and it has been sent to their devs. They suggest temporarily disabling SIP to get past the issue, fwiw.

Thank you, but I'm still hesitating to update to Big Sur :(
Any chance you've tried this with Dead Cells?
florean Dec 25, 2020 @ 11:08am
I haven't tried Dead Cells. You can post in that thread for confirmation from someone that it works. I'm confident it will, that Dead Cells isn't messing around with drivers on the Mac, but it doesn't hurt to wait.

Same issue as everyone else. On Big Sur, gamepad driver installation doesn't work. Hope this gets resolved soon. Oddly enough, gamepad support works well on Epic Games Store.

Poosh, see the link to my workaround a few posts back.

Added my own ticket, HT-B472-JF2T-M2YN. M1 mac, can't use the workaround. I bought this computer, so excited to be able to finally finish my favorite game (my old computer crashed and burned) but now I can't use half my controller buttons. Same issue as everyone else, tried everything. This is really discouraging
