macOS 11 Big Sur support
After updating to the beta of macOS 11 Big Sur, it seems Steam does not recognise it is running on macOS, and therefore refuses to run any game. I've tried running Parkitect from within the steamapps folder, and that does work, indicating the problem originates within the Steam client, not individual games. I hope Steam fixes this issue soon, which is why I've decided to bring it to light here. I hope this is the right place to do so.

p.s. Sadly, for many of my other games (Football Manager 2020, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Hearts of Iron IV), this method does not work as it requires starting the game from within Steam. Does anyone know a quick fix to circumvent this problem for these games, or does such a fix not exist?

UPDATE: fixed in the latest beta! Just enrol in Steam's beta program and force update your client, and play buttons will not be greyed out anymore.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard but the only thing that worked for me was clicking on the "move to bin" when it popped up and then reopening. Do it until it finally opens as in move to bin, open app, move to bin, open app... weird but it works.

I can't open it from bin.. won't let me. oh well.

You don't open it from the bin but on your dock. Just drag the app onto the dock.

still don't work. says it can't open because it's in the bin... ah screw it.. i'll just have to buy a new laptop or gaming PC and keep the Mac for Garageband.. stupid Steam.

Update: I contacted Steam support and they guided me on how to fix the issue. I can now download and play my games *IMPORTANT* the first response that I got from them was not helpful so I made sure to let them know. After that they suggested something other fix that thankfully worked.

I'm left wondering what the fix that worked actually was. Why would you omit it?

I'll quote the exact solution that I received and that worked for me.

"Hi there,

A full uninstall and re-install of the Steam program may help with this issue. To do so, please complete all of thee following steps:

- Exit Steam if you have it running
- Drag the Steam application from the location you installed it in (Applications by default) to the Trash.
- Open the Finder, Go to your Macintosh HD folder (access this from devices in the left column).
- Hold down CMD-Shift-Period, All the hidden files will become visible.
- Next, go to User/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Steam.
- Delete all of the files and folders in the /Steam folder except for /SteamApps.
- Re-download Steam and reinstall the application.
- Launch Steam.app from your Dock or Applications folder. "

Thank you Nemesis for your detailed description. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I still get the same initial message "The Steam file is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash”.
I also tried changing some commands in Terminal, but with the same result. I don't know what else to try. It is a bugger as I've just purchased some games.
Would you have any workaround?

Cheers

I'm afraid to upload Big Sur onto my Mac because it says it doesn't support apps from unknown devs. And many of my games on Steam apparently have "unknown" sources. Is there some way to circumvent this, by changing security settings? Or should I just stick with Catalina?

From what i understand all steam games are registered through steam as the publisher/developer. I know i haven't had any issues with installing any games because of that. Other issues on the beta yes but not because of unknown developer.

Well, don't use a OS that is still in development and will be for months before it is even fit for productive use.

seriously ,everyone should update to Big Sur beta because its good

why would I hold back myself from the latest & more advanced infrastructure because of valve's incompetence on running steam ?? people like you are unbelievable .....

and blizzard got day 1 native ARM 64bit apple silicone support for world of warcraft while valve are slacking around ?

I unfortunately don't. Have you been in contact with the Steam support team?
