Yes, you need Steam to play the Steam game.

What wasn't working? Please explain.

I can't open it using the steam I have downloaded on my mac so tried to download the windows version but it isn't working

Windows steam won't open so can't even try to DL the game

Hi, I had the same problem, and i fixed it . Basically my parents got me the original zoo tycoon 2, my mum tried it on her lap top, but her laptop had been hacked and it didn't work, i got zoo tycoon zoo keeper gold collection, and i tried it but it said it couldn't find the graphics for the game, after trying a lot of things a few days passed. I only just got a disc drive for my zoo tycoon 2 game. And i thought maybe i can play the original version, i put it in, and it said it was already installed, then i pressed play, then it asked me to insert the zoo tycoon zookeeper gold collection disc 1, i put it in, then it started working, so i think it might work on yours too, so try getting the original zoo tycoon 2, and maybe it will work, i don't know but it worked for me, good luck!!

You need to also install proton and enable it in steam.
