external hard drive downloading but not running games

im on a macbook air running high sierra, and like most macbook air users, i get storage issues, 120 gigs really aint a lot of storage, so i got an external hard drive to download my games on, downloads completely fine with everything (albeit fairly slowly), but when i try running them, the game tries to open for around 2-3 minutes, then closes. thought it may have had to do with the size of the game and the slowness of the hard drive, so i tried just running a 10 mb game and even that had the same problem. im kind of a dumdum so i cant really tell what the problem is. if anyone knows of a solution to this problem, please let me know, thanks!

Did you follow the steps to get your steam game folder set up on an external/ non system drive ?
It's fairly easy to do through the Steam app .

As for your MBA, if you have the drive connected via USB 3.0, the speed might be ok .
Write is probably slow, but read speed should be fine .

i think i might've figured it out eventually, though not really sure what i did to fix it, thats generally how i fix a lot of things lmao, thanks for the response though.
