Steam is slow
The steam client has gradually become slower and slower, to the point where it it painful to use. Browsing the store now is click and wait, click and wait, click and wait.

Is there any way I can fix this? Could there be something running in the background that is causing this?

I am using a 2017 imac with an up-to-date OS.

Same problem here. Even the videos on the shop site running at low frame rate. But Big Picture Mode is doing fine.

Same issue. The whole app, videos included, is rendering at about 10fps.

It has nothing to do with macOS. If Steam was written properly for Mac it would run better than the Windows version.

Do you have the Steam Beta Client? By any chance that you do sometimes when there is a new update it'll download without you knowing, chances are you don't but by any chance that maybe one of the causes.

Does Steam require Flash to function properly? I don't have Flash installed (unless it was installed without my knowing) Perhaps that could be the issue.

@lastoblivion I checked just now. It says I'm not participating. I think that means I'm not on a beta client.

I think it does use Flash.

So either I have flash without knowing it, or OS X is doing something to work around the missing Flssh, which could be the cause ...?

Steam has an integrated version of Google Chrome built-in which also has its own version of Flash built-in.

That could explain why it is so horribly slow.

I had GPU Rendering enabled. Once I unchecked it, everything started working fast.
Try Preferences > Interface > "☐ Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" - make sure it's unchecked
