64 bit support on the Mac
Hello Folks. I have a question and I refer it to steam service providers. I checked in my system info on my Mac that Steam is not a 64 bit app, and I also heard the next generation of macOS which will replace High Sierra will no longer support non-64 bit apps. Can something be done about this?

It would be interesting to see what Aspyr and Feral Interactive have to say on this subject.

Unless you really have to upgrade to the new OS, I would always recommend staying with one that works for everything. That is why I have stayed with Sierra, 10.12.6, and it was out a year before I transitioned from Yosemite (I never used El Capitan). Plus I do not intend to go to install High Sierra on my mid-2012 Mac Pro.

Apple have said that High Sierra is the last version of macOS that will support 32-bit "without compromise" but they haven't said what that means yet. It probably doesn't mean that they're cutting off support for 32-bit entirely in 10.14.

In any case, the thing you should worry about isn't Steam, as Valve will almost certainly do a 64-bit version of the Steam client if they have to. The bigger issue is older 32-bit only games which may not ever get 64-bit updates.

I don't want to boot in to my Bootcamp partition, but that may be the only choice some day if Apple ever does completely cut off 32-bit applications.

As of midnight April 12, 2018 in your local timezone[arstechnica.com], your Mac will start warning about 32-bit apps (presumably including Steam).

Guess they'll be getting a flood of bug reports until they release a 64-bit version.

I respectfully disagree with this opinion. It is Apple's job to move technologies and features forward. If you have legacy software to run, it is no big deal, just partition out either an older version of macOS or Windows to run those apps and games. Your main partition and OS should always be the latest version of macOS. This way not only are you the most secure, but developers will know they need to be quick in updating their software since people will move forward with or without them.

It goes for Windows as well. Valve is going to stop supporting Win XP and Vista for Steam next year.
