HELP! Can’t use Steam Controller with Mafia III
Mafia 3 does not have full support for the controller as the steam overlay becomes non-existent beause of ASPYR's stupid launcher! Please guys help a fellow gamer out. I know there isn't much support for Mac gamers out there but this one needs your help please!

Hey kavonx3, have you gone through the setup instructions at: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6311-RDGM-2712

If so, is there any part of that that isn't working for you or does the controller not work after adding it through Big Picture?

Do you mean when you turn on your steam controller and try to push the buttons and pads nothing happens? If you can hear haptic feedback I believe that means it is connected. This has happened to me, I had to open steam to get the controller to work. The steam controller sometimes will not output to my mac unless I have steam open sometimes.

If this is not your problem, please excuse my ignorance.

Cheers!

As far as I know that should be the case always, that you need Steam open to use your Steam controller, unless using it in a game or other app that supports it. All of the desktop stuff like the on-screen keyboard and mouse control are done through Steam though.

Most of the time I can use my steam controller without steam open. When you first plug it in it prompts you to install the inputs into your mac so you can use it without opening steam. Sometimes however it will not output any controlls until steam is open.

Weird, it doesn’t work for me until I start Steam. So you can connect your controller and start using it on the desktop without having Steam running (like say connecting the controller immediately after a restart with Steam not running)?

Yeah, it works on both my mac and windows bootcamp. Thats strange.

Went through all prior stated steps. Wired it works fine; the problem here is the wireless connectivity with the dongle. I've already contacted Steam Support so hopefully something comes up out of it.

Seriously though I just press the Steam button and it blinks for a bit and shuts down; regardless of being in big picture mode, desktop or what have you. It's annoying. :steamsad:

Interesting. Well you could try the wireless extender and put it right by your controller, but if everything else you have tried does not work I do not see how this will. Sorry, hopefully valve addresses this.

Just to confirm, you are able to pair the controller wirelessly with Steam in Big Picture (step 4 in the instructions I linked above, specifically the part where select Add Steam Controller in the Big Picture controller menu)? If so, even after pairing the controller when you turn it on again it just blinks then shuts down? Just asking since the blinking for a bit and shutting down is what the Steam Controller does when it hasn't been paired to a wireless receiver.

The Steam Controller was already paired. But it will now only work wired. It just blinks and shuts down now every-time I try connecting wirelessly. Also my Steam client does not give me the option to "add a steam controller" anywhere in controller settings.

*sigh* this is so frustrating ...

If the option to add a steam controller isn't showing up in controller settings that actually points to Steam not recognizing that you have the dongle connected rather than the controller being unable to connect.

Try shutting down Steam, unplugging and replugging your dongle and checking for "Add a Steam Controller" in Big Picture once it starts. If it still doesn't show up, try unplugging and replugging the dongle while in the controller settings menu and see if it shows up then.

If it still doesn't show up there might be something wrong with your dongle, drivers or USB port. There are some other things you could try in that case but it's best to make sure there isn't a problem with Steam first.

WAIT! IT WORKS NOW! ... at least the controller ...

I figured it out. Also this is for other iMac users seeing the same problem

All I did was reset the PRAM (Restart then hold "command + P + R") and the SMC (System Management Controller) [Shutdown iMac then unplug power cord for 15 seconds then reconnect and wait 5 seconds before re-booting you iMac] !

Thanks guys for being so helpfull!

BUT ...

Mafia III is still not showing the steam overlay message at launch and I can’t use my steam controller with the game! Help!!!
