steamVR Direct Mode not working?
I'm trying to build a VR project using Unity on a MacBook Pro. I just got an external gpu, the RX 580. I am able to run Blobby Tennis just fine using the HTC Vive, but when I try to run any sort of VR from Unity, I get the following problems:

  • SteamVR tells me that I'm in "extended mode", and when I try to switch to "direct mode" it just closes the Steam program
  • When I "play" my Unity project which has the Steam VR pluggin, the Vive goggles just show the blank room with only the sensors and controllers. No other elements are in the scene...

Has anybody else encountered these problerms? Or is there anybody else out there using an eGPU with a Mac to run Unity projects using the SteamVR Pluggin?

fell free to post helpful comments as well.

I'm looking for tips on how to get Unity VR projects running correctly while using SteamVR pluggin on a Mac, with the HTC Vive...right now I can't get "direct mode" working, and I think that is causing issues. I'm also unable to find any Mac compatable drivers for the Radeon RX580. Apparently Mac forums tell me that the latest OS 10.13.xx should already contain the drivers I need, but I'm not so sure about that.

I tried to do all this again, without the external GPU, and I still can't get direct mode working. So maybe it's not the GPU's problem?

Thanks for all the helpful replies...

I've repeated my Unity project on Windows, and have the same problem. The Vive Goggles don't show the scene from my unity project, even though I've placed SteamVR Camera Rig in the scene....not sure why the goggles don't take that camera rig's POV?

Looks like there's some driver limitations that require both your screen (in your case, the build in laptopmonitor) and VR headset to be hooked up to the same GPU for Direct Mode to work. You might want to try with an external monitor hooked to the eGPU and closing/disabling your laptop screen.
