WARNING MAC USERS: DO NOT UPDATE YOUR MAC OS TO CATALINA
Mac OS Catalina 10.15 is going to be the first Mac OS to only support 64-bit. Steam is not going to work for Mac OS 10.15 because the client cannot benefit itself to 32-bit and it has not been optimised to 64-bit, now you have been warned that whenever you have updated the Mac OS to 10.15 Steam will cease to work and then all the Mac users will be extremely upset so please stop the updates after you get to Mojave...

What did you do? Be more specific? I fixed it by downloading the app again and replacing the version in Applications. That’s all

I have deleted and then reinstalled Steam and it still won't open up. I restarted my computer in hopes that that might be the problem. My laptop auto updates to the new version so I too have the Catalina version. Any ideas? It asks if I want to open it since it was downloaded from the internet, I tell it yes, then steam icon bounces once and then stops. Is something blocking it?

Hi, I am stuck in the exact same situation. The icon bounces once, and stops. Nothing to do, it won't open up.

EDIT: Ok I have solved my issue.
It turns out I had to completely remove all files from previous Steam installations, and do a clean install again. Here is described how you can completely remove all steam data :
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3329-WUJN-5636

With the Steam application active, click the Steam menu and Quit Steam to exit Steam.

1) Open Applications and drag Steam to the Trash.
2) click Go in the menu bar, hold down the option key until you see the Library folder, and open that folder from the drop-down.
3) Navigate to Library/Application Support/Steam
4) Delete Steam data from your computer with one of the following options:

If you don't want to lose any game data: delete all files and folders in /Steam EXCEPT FOR the /SteamApps folder (this contains your game downloads and any local save files.)

If you're removing all Steam data from your computer: delete the entire Steam folder.
5) Empty the Trash by selecting Finder -> Empty Trash

I sincerely hope Valve will give free 64 bit upgrades for the popular games like the HalfLife series. Valve and Steam have worked hand in hand for over a decade. Let's hope that relationship continues and they hear our plaintive supplications for a 64 bit patch. :(

I am using the latest 64 bit client and notice that while it is possible to install and run some of them, Steam is not correctly identifying which apps are actually 32-bit vs 64-bit. Example: All of of the Substance apps from Allegorithmic are 64-bit but all are listed as 32-bit, going back from 2020 (pending) to 2018 versions. There are probably other apps listed as 32 that are 64-bit as well.

Is this a known issue / is there a fix in the works? I've updated my client multiple times since first installing 64bit version but the list of "supported" apps for 10.15 doesn't change in terms of how it identifies them all. Hopefully I will not have to install all and then use the OS System Report to verify, then uninstall all that are actually 32-bit. would be a major PITA.

Steam doesn't do anything to detect if a game is actually 64-bit or not, it displays the 32-bit warning if the developer hasn't explicitly tagged the game as being 64-bit in the Steam backend. Lots of devs have apparently not got the memo about this.

Yes, this kind of sucks. I don't know if there are any plans to make it better. It's somewhat better than it was in the new library UI beta, where if you were on Catalina it wouldn't even let you try to play games not tagged 64-bit by the developer.
NormTheGreat 2019 年 11 月 28 日 上午 9:26
What you say about the tagging makes sense on one level but on another, devs must've done some type of flagging / tagging within the app itself because Catalina will correctly identify that said apps are 64-bit and not 32.

Seems like an obvious solution would be whatever function or method macOS uses to identify an app as 64-bit, Valve should use with Steam. Maybe even do some sort of background process that "borrows" the macOS' system report values. Might take a minute to show up but at least it would be accurate.

The whole "update our database" method clearly doesn't work / like you said the devs didn't get the memo. So the end result is that information in Steam is borderline useless. Or if they insist on having devs update the status then if the dev does not, they should not assume 32-bit, which appears to be the case. They should just list "?" or "NA" or "Unknown"

Devs haven't explicitly tagged apps, but they don't have to. Executables in macOS are in a format called Mach-O, and one of the things in the header of a Mach-O file is the architecture that the executable was built for. Reading that information is pretty trivial.

Seems like an obvious solution would be whatever function or method macOS uses to identify an app as 64-bit, Valve should use with Steam.
Yeah. There's a few minor edge cases which wouldn't make it 100% reliable (e.g. Steam is configured to launch a 64-bit executable to show a launcher of some kind, then the launcher runs the actual game which is a 32-bit executable) but it would be better than it is now.

They should just list "?" or "NA" or "Unknown"
Yup. This was my suggestion when this feature first rolled out in the client beta.

somebody tell me, is Steam ever going to fix its problem with microphone access on macbooks? Seems like they absolutely dont care. Only fix on the web is to put it manually while disabling stuff in recovery mode, etc... :(

Thanks for the Warning!

annoying that some new games (like the new tomb raider game) are only available on the new OS. so you cant play it unless you update, but then you cant actually play it because you updated and steam will not work. even if/when they fix steam, most of the games in your library will be unplayable because you updated (and most of them have no plans to update either). im getting pretty sick of mac dropping all their compatibility with older software so often (its happened a few times now). i have been a diehard mac user for a long time, but they dont make it easy sometimes.

Steam does work on Catalina, at most you just need to install again from https://store.steampowered.com/about/

The Steam hardware & software survey stats show that over a quarter of Mac Steam users are on Catalina: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey?platform=mac

That's exactly where I'm at. I have no intention of updating to Catalina until I absolutely have to. Whether Steam works on Catalina or not doesn't concern me. I have games on my account that are 32 bit that I still want to play and those won't work if I update. I've been a long time mac user myself, for 16-17 years and while I have no intention of switching in the near future, Apple are not making it easy. I'd still need to use macs for work stuff... but highly tempted into getting a windows machine for non-work stuff. Will see how it goes though.

I think Apple are trying to push mac users toward their stupid mobile game subscription service, but... that will never happen where I'm concerned.
