Steam osx is damaged and cannot be opened
I recently updated to Catalina (10.15) and I can't reinstall steam. Every time I download it and try it install it, it just says 'steam_osx is damaged and cannot be opened. You should move this to the bin'. I've tried deleting everything in my Library Folder, redownloading, restarting but nothing is working, every time I try this, it fails. I've changed my security settings to allow apps from anywhere and it still won't work. Is anyone else getting this?

Guys, Guys I figured it out!!

you download steam, drag to applications, right click, show package contents, open contents, go to MacOS folder, and click steam.sh -after that finishes loading the updates steam opens. I could weep with joy. Viola!!

Guys it worked - i didn't just drag the steam app in the applications folder. I dragged it on to the folder and was holding until the folder opened and then released it!
THANK YOU. THE NLY THING THAT WORKED FR <33333

I fixed this on my mac! When it asked to drag the steam application into the applications folder, I was always dragging it into my folder on the dock. Instead, I dragged it into the folder in the installation pop up and it worked!
This is the best solution. Thanks

it says it is damaged and i dont know how to fix it
none of this worked, what should i do?
Reboot Mac -> Download Steam -> Drag in Applications Folder -> Open Steam from Application folder = Works.
Ready to give up. I've done everything in the help page, everything in the list specified for Mac OS (but the link to flush code returned the error "unknown page" so I suppose that didn't work. Neither did the tip below. Windows flashed open and I had time to see something about Steam OS being corrupt. If so, and nobody at Steam seems to be reacting, I don't know what more to do.

Maybe it's time to do something more productive, instead of gaming. (I'm only here for CivVI.) I'm writing SF/F and I must say that that creating stories and worlds in my own mind is more fun and creative, instead of following somebody else's idea of how human development into the future should look like. I don't believe in linear evolution, life is organic, not mechanic. Civ is very mechanic...

I just bumped into this error.

Re-downloaded Steam, and dragged the new app onto the Applications folder in the .dmg window to replace the one already installed, but the same error occurred.

But when I first manually deleted Steam from the Applications folder, and _then_ dragged the one from the .dmg onto Applications (not replacing anything), now it works. Because magic, apparently.

Maybe this'll help somebody?

Right click on Steam app, Show Package Content, navigate to Contents/MacOS/ and double click on steam_osx. Terminal will run automatically and Steam will open. It worked for me.
thanks that worked
Just drag the steam into the application when opening the installer, and open steam from the application folder and it should guarantee to work.
I'm at my wit's end. I've tried everything on this thread to get steam to work and contacted support as well. I'm still getting the "steam_osx id damaged and cannot open". I'm running Ventura 13.0 cause I got a new Mac after my last one crapped out years ago.

@Angelos Epithemiou, that worked for me too! THANK YOU! I tried everything else but nothing worked. I clicked on the .dmg, and the instructions popped up showing to drag Steam to Applications, so instead of actually dragging to my applications folder, I dragged to the applications folder in the popup. That FINALLY SUCCESSFULLY prompted Steam to update & install. :)

This works for ventura
