Steam osx is damaged and cannot be opened
I recently updated to Catalina (10.15) and I can't reinstall steam. Every time I download it and try it install it, it just says 'steam_osx is damaged and cannot be opened. You should move this to the bin'. I've tried deleting everything in my Library Folder, redownloading, restarting but nothing is working, every time I try this, it fails. I've changed my security settings to allow apps from anywhere and it still won't work. Is anyone else getting this?

Update;
I got it to download and work, and I can open Undertale now.
When I do, it loads like normal, but then the screen is just black, and a wind sound effect plays. It won't do anything else. I tried a few things to fix that, but I can't figure it out, any ideas?
Edit: No idea if that's even fixable, also yes I tried reinstalling
Edit again: no, this was not after a genocide, it's when I installed it and opened it

I had a similar problem with a downloaded app the other day (not Steam). You might have some luck with the following:

1. Right-click app and with ‘alt’ key depressed select 'Copy “app name.app” as pathname' from the contextual menu to copy the location file path.

2. Open Terminal. Paste the newly copied pathname in between the speech marks of the command below (the speech marks are only necessary if the pathname has any spaces in it).

sudo xattr -cr "/Applications/app name.app"

This worked for me. I got the info from this page, so I'd recommend giving it a read before committing to running the command.

Works for me, thanks so much ¡¡
I just updated steam on MAC version Sierra and this just started happening for me. I cannot even open the dmg, says corrupted, I have no option to drag it into the apps folder. I've tried deleting and emptying trash of all other steam files.

To be 100% clear: I do not get a steam icon. I don't make it that far. I can't open the dmg. So a lot of the above replies don't help me. Tried repairing it with disk utility and that didn't work.

Pleeaassee please help.
new trick I tried Angelos way it didn't work THEN I dragged second time and said keep both you will have two steams but it did work
This is a bit late but this worked for me:
I had opened steam.dmg and dragged it into the applications folder at this point, then tried to open steam when the problem came up ('damaged document')
System preferences -> security & privacy -> privacy (last tab) -> Full Disk Access (scroll down) -> tick steam
Then try to open steam again
I had this problem, I dragged it on to my desktop, then I clicked on it. I got the error then I dragged onto the pop-up folder, I selected keep both files and it finally worked. Just keep playing with it. Its frustrating but try all the combinations in this forum, you'll find one that works!! I did!

Hey man, I've had the same issue. this is how I'VE SOLVED IT. I tried the same steps you tried and followed the thread but NO ONE SAID THIS:

- Delete everything once again, make sure you empty the trash too
- Download
- Open - to install (don't install, yet).
- When it tells you to drag Steam to Apps - or to double click to Install (DO NOT INSTALL, OR DRAG INTO APPS, YET.
- Instead, drag the icon on desktop, then press to install from the icon you dragged on desktop
- I did it, and it worked for me

Hope this is helpful!

I’m still having the same problem even though I’ve moved it into applications folder, I’ve tried reinstalling numerous times but the same message shows up. Really frustrating since I can’t play the games I paid for.
Thank you mate! Really appreciate it

Great! Thank you! It works!
I've been trying to reinstall the client for the game awards (wasn't even aware of them being around again since I haven't been able to use steam in almost a year), since one of the tasks involves playing a nominated game, and though my current hardware is likely not gonna let me do anything beyond idle for a few seconds, I figured I'd do it to complete the badge.

I have a Macbook Air from early 2014 (was only meant as a temporary replacement, but alas, global pandemic and all, no new PC or laptop for me) that runs on OS X 10.9.5 (it never let me update OS beyond that, telling me it is using the latest updates already). I'm no macspert and most things I use this device for don't need me to be, but this is getting a bit frustrating. The very .dmg file steam lets me download when I hit "Install Steam" that ever floats on the top of every page is considered corrupt.

Clicking on the .dmg, I am left with

"Warning

The following disk images couldn't be opened
Image / Reason
steam.dmg / corrupt image"

So the most successful steps around here won't help me because I can't even launch the installer to begin with, as the steam.dmg does not even mount.

I know it's short notice now with the nomination event almost over, but I'd appreciate any help or insights! Even an idler that would work without needing the client running would help (if that exists for OS) for the sake of that badge.
Its happening the same to me :(
This worked for me: open dmg file - drag steam app to applications (directly or via installation pop up window) - go to applications - right click on steam icon - show package contents - open "contents" folder - open "MacOS" folder - run "steam_osx" (double click) --> terminal file should start running and updating steam - open steam app again
