Steam osx is damaged and cannot be opened
I recently updated to Catalina (10.15) and I can't reinstall steam. Every time I download it and try it install it, it just says 'steam_osx is damaged and cannot be opened. You should move this to the bin'. I've tried deleting everything in my Library Folder, redownloading, restarting but nothing is working, every time I try this, it fails. I've changed my security settings to allow apps from anywhere and it still won't work. Is anyone else getting this?

I just found a way to properly get it open,
1. go to applications then left-click on steam and press "Show Package Content"
2.Go to the content folder and press "MacOS"
3.Then duplicate the "Steam_osx" program and run the copy
4. one it has updated and done it thing steam should work 😁
It took forever to find a solution

If it helps in the least, for the Macbook Air, just make a copy and run that copy.

Hello, Kenny! Many thanks to all previous posters, but I had to do one extra step to get it running.
Steam puts a file in your home folder Library at launch that gets quarantined by Apple.

/Users/{your_username}/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS/steam_osx

Open up a Terminal window and run

```
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine "/Users/{your_username}/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS/steam_osx"
```

Hope it helps!

I fixed this on my mac! When it asked to drag the steam application into the applications folder, I was always dragging it into my folder on the dock. Instead, I dragged it into the folder in the installation pop up and it worked!

you've literally saved my life

Guys it worked - i didn't just drag the steam app in the applications folder. I dragged it on to the folder and was holding until the folder opened and then released it!

Thank you!

@Angelos Epithemiou, that worked for me too! THANK YOU! I tried everything else but nothing worked. I clicked on the .dmg, and the instructions popped up showing to drag Steam to Applications, so instead of actually dragging to my applications folder, I dragged to the applications folder in the popup. That FINALLY SUCCESSFULLY prompted Steam to update & install. :)

I did the opposite and it worked. So strange.

Hey man, I've had the same issue. this is how I'VE SOLVED IT. I tried the same steps you tried and followed the thread but NO ONE SAID THIS:

- Delete everything once again, make sure you empty the trash too
- Download
- Open - to install (don't install, yet).
- When it tells you to drag Steam to Apps - or to double click to Install (DO NOT INSTALL, OR DRAG INTO APPS, YET.
- Instead, drag the icon on desktop, then press to install from the icon you dragged on desktop
- I did it, and it worked for me

Hope this is helpful!
