Steam osx is damaged and cannot be opened
I recently updated to Catalina (10.15) and I can't reinstall steam. Every time I download it and try it install it, it just says 'steam_osx is damaged and cannot be opened. You should move this to the bin'. I've tried deleting everything in my Library Folder, redownloading, restarting but nothing is working, every time I try this, it fails. I've changed my security settings to allow apps from anywhere and it still won't work. Is anyone else getting this?

I had a similar problem with a downloaded app the other day (not Steam). You might have some luck with the following:

1. Right-click app and with ‘alt’ key depressed select 'Copy “app name.app” as pathname' from the contextual menu to copy the location file path.

2. Open Terminal. Paste the newly copied pathname in between the speech marks of the command below (the speech marks are only necessary if the pathname has any spaces in it).

sudo xattr -cr "/Applications/app name.app"

This worked for me. I got the info from this page, so I'd recommend giving it a read before committing to running the command.

Hey man, I've had the same issue. this is how I'VE SOLVED IT. I tried the same steps you tried and followed the thread but NO ONE SAID THIS:

- Delete everything once again, make sure you empty the trash too
- Download
- Open - to install (don't install, yet).
- When it tells you to drag Steam to Apps - or to double click to Install (DO NOT INSTALL, OR DRAG INTO APPS, YET.
- Instead, drag the icon on desktop, then press to install from the icon you dragged on desktop
- I did it, and it worked for me

Hope this is helpful!

I’m still having the same problem even though I’ve moved it into applications folder, I’ve tried reinstalling numerous times but the same message shows up. Really frustrating since I can’t play the games I paid for.

After trying all the previous suggestions, this is what finally worked for me. YMMV, apparently. Thanks!
"I selected "Move to trash", emptied my trash, and then opened steam and it worked for me. I guess there was a corrupted file that got deleted, but not the software itself."

I can't believe this worked, omg i've been trying forever but this is the only thing that worked.

hi guys! this worked for me:

1. drag the steam application into the applications folder that appears in the pop up
2. then open your applications tab (f4 on your mac) and click steam from there
3. it'll take a while but it should be able to read the application! it might not start the application immediately so you'll have to go back to the applications pop-up where they ask you to drag the steam application into the applications folder and click steam directly there.

that was the fix for me!

I finally got it working, after I found this on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/ebro2r/unable_to_run_steam_on_new_macbook_pro_16/

The 'trick' is that - in case you had Steam (the 32 bit version) before, it's not enough to just delete the app, you also have to get rid of
~/Library/Application Support/Steam
Either delete it or (if you're paranoid like me) rename this directory.
Then run the install again. Steam runs and downloads, extracts and installs updates. I had to start it several times (I think at least twice or maybe even 3 times), where it downloads, extracts and installs update stuff, so don't think that's wrong and/or don't get impatient
It then finally starts and runs.

Worked thanks dude.:steamhappy:

I fixed this on my mac! When it asked to drag the steam application into the applications folder, I was always dragging it into my folder on the dock. Instead, I dragged it into the folder in the installation pop up and it worked!
I fixed it!
