Macbook Pro overheating. Any way to fix??
Hi,

So my macbook pro is about 8 months old. Up to now there's been no issues with my laptop and all software/games have worked perfectly. I recently installed XCOM2 and installed some mods. Everything was fine up until the last couple of days when the game started crashing and the macbook kept freezing up during play, including one instance where the laptop made a pretty horrendous sound through the headphones before switching itself off.

Although I'm using a laptop stand, I realised that the macbook was getting very hot to touch on the bottom, and it started becoming obvious that overrheating was the problem (during those couple of days I was using a fan heater in the room). I have since stopped using the fan heater when using the laptop but the macbook is still frequently getting very hot when playing XCOM2 and crashes to desktop after a couple of minutes, which it never did before the issues arose.

I was just wondering if anyone could share their technical expertise on the subject, whether there is a solution for this and whether or not has caused permenant damage, and if it has whether it is worth getting the laptop repaired.

Here are the specs (please let me know if I've left anything out!):

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
macOS Sierra 10.12.6 (16G1114)
3.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB
13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch
16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Built-in 49.2-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery/61W USB-C Power Adapter

Any advice would be amazing, thanks.

First off: Do these things.

Go to your steam library. Right click your game. Go to properties. Click local files. Click verify integrity of files. Valve will then check your game's files to indentify any missing ones.

Second. Do an SMC reset. Search this up.

Third. Disk Utility. Finder-Utilities-Disk Utitlies.

fix
Thanks for your suggestions!

@Washtingon Cavalry I did all you suggested, unfortunately once again both the bottom and some of the top of the laptop got very hot to touch and the game crashed.

@Nthsideplaya Don't use Firefox, but I will try investing in those screwdrivers and cleaning the fans. The Mac is under warranty, so is it easier just sending it off to be looked at? Just aware this came about when using that heater and now it's a constant issue.

I have this exact problem with my mac pro. Stellaris, Axis and Allies + other games causes over heat and crash following CPU max usage. Any fix?
So never found a solid fix, although for me I suspect it was partly the mix of mods I was using that made the CPU max out. I did however find out that macbooks are designed to go from 0 to 100 when using beefy apps and games, and there isn't much you can do to control it.

A few recommendations is replace the factory thermal paste as it's pretty useless, and then keep it free from dust as best as possible.

You could try using an app like SMC Fan Control or Macs Fans Control to make them either kick in sooner or run manually at a higher speed. That said, I don't know what kind of cooling setup the 2016 MBP has.
