Is it ok for my CPU to run at 100C
I've noticed using mac fan control (set to show CPU diode temp, CPU proximity is generally 5-6C lower) that my CPU consistently heats to and stays at around 100C when running half life 2 death match even though my fans are running at full blast (2000rpm). Is this bad for my processor? I'm concerned that it may shorten my macbook's lifespan which would be bad as I didn't really buy it for serious gaming - I have a tower pc for that, the Macbook is for school and light gaming when I'm away from my PC.

Running other games (Colin McRae Rally, BrainBread 2, TF Classic) it stays around 90.

Macbook Pro Mid 2009 (5,5) - Core 2 Duo 2.26ghz, GeForce 9400m, 8GB RAM, OSX Mavericks 10.9.5

You should look inside your laptop.Maybe there a lot of dust.

Probably is. I have an air blowing hand pump thing I use for cleaning my camera stuff should that be ok instead of compressed air?

Buy a laptop cooler, clean your laptop, and 100c is not ok. 70-80 degrees is fine, but if it goes over 90, then try the things I just said.

Ok, I might also replace the thermal paste if cleaning out the dust doesn't improve it enough. Am I right in that CPU diode is the temperature I should be looking at rather than CPU proximity?

2009 MBP and you haven't replaced the paste? Yeah, shut it down and stop using it until you do so. That stuff does not last forever.

Srsly lol? It runs at around 50 doing basic stuff like browsing, google images, depends what I'm on. After a couple of hours or so it always seems to get up to around 70. RN its 42 becuase I opened it about 10 minutes ago

(And btw it's not me who's neglected to change the paste for 9 years, I just bought it off ebay before xmas ;)

Out of interest, how often should thermal paste be replaced? My gaming PC turned 2 this christmas, should that need doing too?

Lol I didn't think it would be that much of a deal as it is a laptop so I expected cooling to be worse. Plus it's the 2009 one and the graphics card is really ♥♥♥♥ so I expected gaming to push it.
I just checked my PC and that only gets up to about 20 - 30 degrees running gta so yes I guess 100 degrees running hl2dm is pretty bad xD.
