I can't really comment on Xbox one controllers as I use 360 pads but rolling back to 0.16.8 helped with wireless functionality using the wireless adapter.
https://github.com/360Controller/360Controller/releases
In previous MacOS versions I wired the controller through USB + the 360Controller unofficial driver. It worked fine enough, except for the flimsy micro-USB connector on the controller that often lost contact if not being held at the exact angle.
With Mojave, connecting wirelessly through Bluetooth was made easier and it worked well with many of my Steam games that came with controller support.
MacOS Catalina devolved Bluetooth support. Steam Big Picture Mode recognizes the One S controller, having trouble with the triggers. Steam games don’t even see a controller present. Enjoyable, a keyboard mapper, recognizes the controller except for the triggers. OpenEmu works perfectly, recognizing every button & analog stick.
There is not much Mac support by game developers. Often when a new OS upgrade is released something gets broken and it can take a long time before it is solved, if ever.
Despite being Microsoft’s, why don’t Apple or Steam do something about it? Don’t Steam & Apple want to promote video game usage in their own platforms?
