xbox one wireless controller
Trying to use the xbox one wireless controller on a macbook is extremely frustrating.

Connecting the controller over bluetooth is quick and easy (native support in macos), however, actually using it in Steam games is something else. Sometimes the controller doesn't get recognized at all by the game (not even in big picture mode). And I can never remap any buttons so things make more sense, the sensitivity is nuts so that trying to select a menu option is a total slot game. And sometimes the controllers seem like they are permanently stuck on going LEFT, so I have to forcefully hold it RIGHT just to stand still. A lot of the times most buttons dont even do anything, and to top it all off: EVERYTHING changes when you involve Steam in Big Picture Mode (toggling xbox controller support on and off). Now I can't even remember in what game what controller worked with what setup. :))

It's a complete mess. In Windows, everything always seem to work out of the box. And when I do have an issue (which is very rare), then the fix was usually straight forward and permanent.

So now, I'm going to try over usb, although I've read this isn't working perfect either, but most of the times it gives less issues. Anyway, my MBP only has usb-c/tb3 ports, and I've already tried two different usb hubs, but both fail to connect the xbox controller ("no devices found" when I open the 360 driver -downloaded from github). And I'm sure the hubs work because I can connect other devices just fine.

So I'm thinking of using a direct micro-usb to usb-c cable instead of a hub. Any experiences or advice?Would, for example this one work?https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UUBRYS0/ref=psdc_464394_t1_B01GGKYE4U?th=1

I just can't understand why MacOS is having some much trouble with controllers.
(Some people gave me advice to use a DS3 or 4, but I'd rather not switch to another controller.)

Thanks.

I suspect it's because they don't offer controller support natively. Have you tried an older version of the driver?

I can't really comment on Xbox one controllers as I use 360 pads but rolling back to 0.16.8 helped with wireless functionality using the wireless adapter.

Running MacOS 10.15 in MacBook Pro 13” late 2013 in October 2019 and game support for the Xbox One S wireless controller on Steam is still a mess.

In previous MacOS versions I wired the controller through USB + the 360Controller unofficial driver. It worked fine enough, except for the flimsy micro-USB connector on the controller that often lost contact if not being held at the exact angle.

With Mojave, connecting wirelessly through Bluetooth was made easier and it worked well with many of my Steam games that came with controller support.

MacOS Catalina devolved Bluetooth support. Steam Big Picture Mode recognizes the One S controller, having trouble with the triggers. Steam games don’t even see a controller present. Enjoyable, a keyboard mapper, recognizes the controller except for the triggers. OpenEmu works perfectly, recognizing every button & analog stick.

There is not much Mac support by game developers. Often when a new OS upgrade is released something gets broken and it can take a long time before it is solved, if ever.

Despite being Microsoft’s, why don’t Apple or Steam do something about it? Don’t Steam & Apple want to promote video game usage in their own platforms?
