updated to high Sierra now steam missing text
As the title suggests, I've just updated to High Sierra, steam launches but I can't use it at all because most the text is missing. I tried opening a game, and a window with a cloud and an explanation point symbol pops up, with no text so I dont know what it says. The game never launches.

Trying to launch the games manually just results in the app telling me to launch it through steam.

I see the same thing - running it via the console gives me this, over and over:

/Users/buildbot/buildslave/steam_rel_client_hotfix_osx/build/src/vgui2/src/surface_osx.mm (3708) : Assertion Failed: !"Unable to find font"

I have the same problem. Any clues as to how to overcome this ? Valve what's wrong ? Alpha blending doesn't go well on Metal ?

A temp fix is run a bootcamp so you get windows and mac on the same computer its easy to do and is really safe just look up " how to install windows on mac" and any vid after martch 2017 then install steam on there

I was able to solve it. I have no idea why this worked but it did.

After googling around again I found a few old threads from like 2014 that were about this same problem. The fix back then was to download all the steam fonts and install them. Pretty much all the Ariel fonts I think. Obivously included in high sierra, right? Well I deciced what the hell I might as well try it. When I tried to install the fonts, font book of course warns me that there are duplicate fonts being installed. I ignored the warning and installed them anyways. Then deleted the ones that were already there. I rebooted and sure enough steam was working again!

Just google "steam fonts" and you should be able to find the download for it.

Also have this problem.

There is a thread from a few years back that states it is related to the hard drive being case sensitive? I explored the fix for this which involved running some script in terminal, this did not work on my mac running high sierra.

I don't have a fix, but one very simple way around it is to run steam in full screen by hitting the 'controller' icon in the top right.

If you're at the log in window, try and guess your way through logging in, steam will still work it just isn't displaying fonts. When in the full screen game mode you should be able to navigate your way to running a game just fine and just hope steam fixes this in the meantime.

Could not start steam AT ALL. There was no login. I just installed from scratch and macOS was brand new. About what False Adevertisement said, I already have an M.2 SSD hoocked up onto thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and I have my "windows gaming" setup on that, it's as fast as the one from the MPB can bee when running windows so there's pretty much no difference. I just wanted to run steam from macOS because I like to stream games from my gaming RIG which is a full blown gaming machine. And of course I can run CSGO from the Mac just fine, although the performance is not quite like the one from Windows 10.

Anyway I've fixed this by using that thread with the fonts. Now it's working but it should not happen as I installed everything CLEAN, I had no pref saved on my mac, the installer I got from getsteam site, and so on.

Should be properly tested on macOS High Sierra.

Please tell me where to find the original fonts that you found. I've been looking everywhere in application support files but I just can't find them. If you could help me locate the original fonts so I can delete them that would be great.
