High Sierra update causes Steam client not to start?
Updated to high Sierra this monday, now my client won't start. Uninstalled, removed all hidden files, reinstalled etc, with no luck. Anyone else with the same problem?

Yep, I've installed clean HS (to take advantage of APFS) and after installing client I see Steam window with no username and password fields, so I cannot login.

Go to Steam > Preferences > Account > Beta Participation and download update.

Just did this and could log in as normal.

My client doesn't even start! However another account on the mac can start Steam, so it seems there's is something corrupt with the account in the Mac directories, the solution would be to delete all references to Steam, but the folders that I deleted are not sufficient, it seems Steam is installing more files or directories in places I don't know where to look for.

I managed to enable the Beta program on a different computer that it'll successfully launch on, but I'm still seeing the same failure to launch after re-downloading the "latest" client for my Mac. You've had almost 4 months to test and adjust with the High Sierra developer previews, Steam...you should be embarrassed...

so, if you right click on the Steam.app, and have it "Show Package Contents," you can burrow in far enough to find the steam_osx file that actually executes the game. Here's what happens when I try to run that in Terminal:

/Applications/Steam.app/Contents/MacOS/steam_osx [2017-10-02 20:38:15] Startup - updater built Aug 22 2016 17:36:46 found breakpad via in process memory: '/Applications/Steam.app/Contents/Frameworks/Breakpad.framework/Versions/A/Resources' Installing breakpad crash handler Uploading pending dumps Uploaded 1 pending dumps /BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.1.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:50: Error: unsupported compressor 8 /BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.1.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/Exceptions.plist' /BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.1.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:50: Error: unsupported compressor 8 /BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.1.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/AppExceptions.bundle/Exceptions.plist' [2017-10-02 20:38:15] Startup - updater built Sep 6 2017 20:41:28 found breakpad via in process memory: '/Users/[redacted]/Library/Application Support/Steam/Steam.AppBundle/Steam/Contents/MacOS/Frameworks/Breakpad.framework/Versions/A/Resources' Installing breakpad crash handler Looks like steam didn't shutdown cleanly, scheduling immediate update check SteamID: 0, universe Public [2017-10-02 20:38:15] Checking for update on startup [2017-10-02 20:38:15] Checking for available updates... [2017-10-02 20:38:16] Performing checksum verification of executable files [2017-10-02 20:38:17] Verification complete

So, it looks to be something with the executable not understanding the compression scheme, which makes me strongly suspect Steam hasn't been taught to play nice with the APFS file scheme in High Sierra. If folks are running spinning HDDs or Fusion drives, they won't hit this, because those volumes don't convert to APFS on installing High Sierra yet.

Steam works fine for me on High Sierra maybe you could try this:

Try the following:

1. Close Steam

2. Select your destop so Finder is active.

3. Way on top of your desktop in the grey bar you will find the GO menu.

4 . Select 'Go to folder'

5. Copy and past the below line include the ~

~/Library/Application Support/

6. Rename the "Steam" folder to "Steam.old"

7. Try again to lauch Steam.

Looks like they don't care :D

My file system is on the Apple/Samsung SSD and using APFS.

The problem may be the user account.

Make a new user in System Preferences, then reinstall Steam via that user.
Did not help.

I have the same thing. I tried clicking around on the screen, and managed to start the signup for an account process. So it seems to me that there are elements of the screen that are there but not being rendered or displayed. On the signup flow I get the two screen displaying the user agreement etc, and then click next until there is a blank screen. Not really what I want as I already have an account. It's just weird to me that Apple released an OS version that has these compatibility problems. Steam isn't the only app I'm having problems with. I feel like I'm beta testing High Sierra.

I can launch steam and CSGO, but the game is not even playable. It is way laggy despite my solid internet. Must be a problem with compression protocols.
