SteamVR with MacPro 5,1 and NVIDIA graphics card
Hello, anybody succeed to run SteamVR with HTC Vive on Mac Pro 5,1 with NVIDIA graphics card?
My system setting is below.
OS X High Sierra
NVIDIA GTX980
Web driver and Cuda installed.
HTC VIve connected to HDMI port.

When I run SteamVR, it starts, and room setting can be launched.
However, only gray empty screen shows in Vive.
The warning to "enable direct mode" repeatedly pops up, but when I click enable, the SteamVR NEVER restarts properly. (It closes, and stop there forever.)

If anybody succeed, please let me know proper setting or tips.

I run the same machine (5,1 with GTX 970) in 10.12.6 without the HTC. I have never been able to get Steam VR to work under the Mac OS. In the Steam tools menu (Mac side), it states "not available" for the Mac platform. I would guess that you should be able to get it to work on the PC side under BootCamp if you run it as a pure PC and not under Parallels or the like. It could also be a High Sierra issue as I do not believe that Steam is fully supporting the new OS just yet.

Same as me.
Since there are no official documents clearly mention the limitation, it's hard to plan anything

I'm getting the same thing. Similar setup (Hackintosh with a Nvidia 1080).
Constant "Enable Direct Mode" message that doesn't work and nothing else works either.

Hi All, I'm running Steam + HTC Vive on a mid 2012 5,1 cheesegrater mac pro 12 core 3.46, 64g ram and Nvidia 1070 ti in High Sierra. It was a bit of a thrutch at the outset but now it is doing well and played Blobby Tennis (VR) for 56 min with no hangs, no dropped frames, smooth image and no nausea. I realize that is pretty low bar with regrds to graphics but I use the same system for editing 360 video and with High Sierra had to switch over to the Vive from DK2 (for viewing in HMD whilst stitching and editing) so figured i'd see what else i could do with it. So far so good, just need some more clear offerings for the combo :)

Hi, what exactly did you do to get it working. Cant get it working on none of my GPUs, Geforce 1080 Ti, 1050 Ti, nor AMD 7970... (!)..

Seems Valve only supports it on the brand new AMD GPUs, software blocked?! Maybe something in the Metal 2 drivers that is only in place for the new AMD cards... I wonder. Extremely annoying as it absolutely should work on all of these cards.

Do you get the steam home environment etc?!

It was not 100% straight forward, and depending on the updates (which seem to happen almost daily right now) sometimes home environment works, sometimes it only half works. It's like a magical box of chocolates currently, who knows what surprise awaits!

Back to your question though, I had to follow the steps for install and setup very specifically, both from the computer hardware/driver standpoint and steam standpoint.

Thanks, for the first time I got something loading, Gravity Sketch.. on my AMD Radeon HD7970.. However, due to a Apple bug introduced in High Sierra it's with a strong purple tint on the HDMI output.. buggy all the way!.. Filed a bug report with Apple.. too.

Also, pointer device at the traditional SteamVR menue is reversed along a horizontal mirror line.. very strange. Maybe next year things will start getting stabel..?

In addition, extemely little content available right now..

UPDATE:
I also got Blobby Tennis working with the latest SteamVR Beta and my Radeon HD7970(!), however with a distorted color palet as a bug in High Sierra loads the wrong color settings for the device. Everything looks very purple. With the Geforce 1050Ti it is a lot of garbage on screen, not working at all correctly. Hopefulle future updates to the Nvidia drivers will solve this and / or updates to SteamVR. Also have Gravity Sketch running with the Radeon HD7970 card (of course, same issue there with the colors due to the new Apple bug). Same distorted graphics results on my Geforce 1080Ti. Probably Pascal series driver issue.
I have filed the Nvidia related issue with Nvidia, hoping they look into it soon.

The number one thing i keep forgetting when i've had to reinstall etc.. is to enable the beta mode. Go to library -> tools -> SteamVR -> properties -> BETAS -> select the beta and then hit close (you don't need beta access code) If i forget this step, it won't work, and i can't get room setup to run etc...
