My Steam Can't Open Any Game: OS Error 4294956486
Hi guys,
I installed steam on a mac book pro. Before this week, I could play games such as Dota2, Left 4 Dead, Limbo etc.
I moved my SSD of the mac to another exactly same configuration mac book this week. After that, I couldn't open any games. I got OS Error 4294956486 when try to launch LIMBO. When I launch Dota2, nothing happens.

I've tried many methods from Internet: restart computer; update OS version to latest; delete steam and game files entirely, reinstall Steam and games.

Are there any other solutions? It would be very helpful.

Here is mac's overview:
Mac OS 10.12.6 Sierra
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,4
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP114.0172.B25

Thanks a lot.

Still doesn't work. I've upgraded everything. Are there any other possible solutions?

Thanks

Probably best to contact STeam support on this one. My condolences.

They suggest nothing but those in their Support pages. I've tried all of them.

I found it was conflicted with my antivirus software. Try to close or uninstall yours :)

Hi guys

I know this is an old thread, but since I've been experiencing this same problem in the last days and updating my mac OS did't help: Does anyone have a solution to this issue? I'm trying to run Order of Battle. Four weeks ago, there was not problem. This week it occurred the first time. As I said, after updating my OS to High Sierra the issue persists. Does anyone have a solution?

I've solved this on my Mac for a totally different game, but exactly the same error and behaviour. Here's what I did.

On MY Mac, my steam games are stored in this location:
/Volumes/Geode/Shared/Steam/

On a more conventional setup, your games are probably stored in:
/Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Steam

The game that was giving me trouble was “Adventure Pals”. If I clicked on it in Steam, I got the OS Error. If I follow these steps, the game runs.

  1. Start a Terminal (Go to Applications, Utilities, and double-click Terminal). This gets you a command line where you can type commands.
  2. In the terminal, type:
    cd Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/common
  3. Type
    ls
and press Enter. This will list what games you have. In my case I could see a folder called
    The Adventure Pals
    .
  4. I needed to find the program to run. In my case that means typing 2 commands:
    cd "The Adventure Pals/Adventure Pals.app/Contents/MacOS"
    and then
    ./"Adventure Pals”
. When I did this, the game ran.

To make it easier, I created a shortcut on my desktop so that I wouldn’t have to do this every time. This command creates an (ugly looking, but effective) shortcut that launches the game when I click it.
ln -s "/Volumes/Geode/Shared/Steam/steamapps/common/The Adventure Pals/Adventure Pals.app/Contents/MacOS/Adventure Pals" ~/Desktop/

I don’t know what’s causing Steam to fail to launch the app from within the Steam desktop. But this totally works fine. If you want to do this for another game, you need to follow the steps, but change words like “The Adventure Pals" with EmergeNYC_Mac or whatever your game is called. There’s no magic fix or generic way to do this. This is just a clunky workaround. Hope this helps someone.

All this is doing is finding the program file on the hard disk and executing it directly. There is no danger to any of the commands I've suggested typing. You're just looking at files and asking the computer to run some commands.
