Steam would like to control this computer using accessibility features
Every Damn Time I run a game in Steam, my Mac prompts me to enable Steam in the Privacy, Accessibility section of Security & Privacy in System Preferences. I enable it but then after I quit Steam, sure enough, it's back again the next time. Every time. Is there a way to fix this?

macOS Sierra 10.12
Steam Built: Dec 19 2016
Steam API v017
Steam package versions 1482202200

I'm having the same issue as you and it doesn't look like there's a way to fix it

apple does this automaticly with most of their devices to stop spam and viruses. thats what makes them such a good company is because of their security

@runald weezly, yes, having granular controls over which processes have escalated Accessibility priviledges is a security feature. However, the system repeatedly forgetting the setting is probably a Steam implementation bug because many other applications which request these priveledges do not have this same problem. Not to mention, after poking around online, this seems to be an issue which Steam for Mac has had for many years.

I contacted Steam support 4 days ago and have not received any reply yet.

It looks like a lot of people had a problem with it back in 2014, but that was fixed. I only started having problems with it rcently and all the old fixes don't seem to work. How do you contact Steam directly, btw? I've clicked all over the website and can only find links to the messageboards and fixes for common problems. Maybe if they hear more messages from people with the same problem, they'll see it as more of a priority.

I clicked on Help Menu -> Steam Support -> Steam Client -> Steam Client Crashes.

The crash isn't entirely accurate but it's the only way I could figure out how to contact them.

Any response @squirrel grinder?

I'm having this same issue. Seemed to work fine yesterday without prompting me, but now the first time I start up steam between different games, I get this prompt. I go through the motions and check the unchecked box in System Prefs, I try to use shift+tab and nothing. The FPS was showing the previous few days just fine as well and now that's not showing up either. The weird thing is that Big Picture Mode overlay seems to work just fine, but Steam and macOS still prompt me upon booting a game to enable control in System Prefs again and again. It works fine on Steam on my Bootcamp Partition running Windows 7..

I think everybody is having the problem. Why would Big Picture Mode need Accessibility perms anyway @todkon?
todkon Jan 19, 2017 @ 2:57am
You'd think the overlay in-game with Big Picture Mode would require the same privileges, but it somehow overrides them and works. I take it that it uses the same method as the regular, 'non-Big Picture' mode overlay in game. Also, like I said in the previous post, it prompts you with the same messages when launching a game via Big Picture mode as it does with vanilla Steam.

Any news on this?

I was out of town for a week so I haven't been following up on this but I received a reply from Steam Support that only asked for a screenshot of my "About This Mac" page. Very disappointing. I've sent it in but I doubt we'll get anywhere.

So I can better understand your problem, I'd like to know your Mac's system specs.

Please reply with a screenshot of your System Information window on your Mac.

Your system information can be found by clicking the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen. From the drop-down menu, click 'About This Mac'.

Once we have this information we'll be happy to investigate further.

Everyone commenting on this thread should also file crash reports. If they get enough complaints, maybe they'll actually start caring!

Once they deal with this I hope to then get on to the firewall warning that pops up every time I start Steam…

I've been given the "this will be forwarded to other people to deal with" treatment, unfortunately.

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue.

I'm forwarding the information on to the appropriate developers so they can take a look at it. If we need additional information we'll reply here.

The development team always releases feature updates and fixes via the Steam client beta. Please opt-in to stay up-to-date.

No that message is good, it means your issue is being forwarded from the 1st support (a support guy with basic support skills) to a 2nd or 3th line support in the development team. So you're issue has been taken as a bug and sooner or later a developper or a very skilled persion will take it further and has to fix it. The bad thing.. This can take a long time, but atleast you have gotten someone to work on this ;-)
