Civilization V overheated my MacbookPro.
So i desided to join Steam to play CiV on a long flight. Night before the flight i wanted to try it out so went to bed with the laptop and stated playing. Tired after the day oi fell asleep with the laptop on my stomach. after an hour or so i woke up to a burning sensation. My Macbook (pro retina late 2013) was Steaming hot ( :) ) to the point where it left burn marks on my stomach that later turned into blisters. For real! Next day i fired up my Macbook and a sharp scratching sound is coming from the cpu/fan area.

So to sum it up. CiV / Steam caused my laptop to overheat to the point where it broke and gave me , dont know what degree burns...Nice..

Does anyone else have a similar expirience and what should i do about this. Not a very pleasnt first Steam expirience...

Well I noticed this that a mac can get burning hot while playing a game or in idle mode inside a game. Just one advice never do this again! I guess even if you had any other laptop and the game goes into screensaver this same would hapen. So one adivce don't get asleep with your laptop this is almost the same as going to sleep with a sigarete in your hand.

yeah...mine gets pretty warm playing CS:GO. But I also never left it running while I fell asleep.
You're not meant to use laptops like that then fall asleep...

You should contact Apple support. Such overheating is a sign of botched thermal.management.

Thx for the answers. Do not agree with the "ur not meant to" comments thou. Been working professionally with laptops (heavy cpu burden) for years and never had similar problems. First of all OsX should react to the heat since its a fire hassard even if you have the laptop on a table. Second, after researching a bit clearly something wrong with the "patch" of the Mac version of CiV since ppls macbooks apparently been burning up. Would have been nice of steam to let me know about this issue before the purchase. Now i have a broken laptop, useless game and burn blisters :/
Thank you guys for your input though and i do respect your personal opinions on LAPtop use.

You shouldn't ever fall asleep with anything that has a battery running. Batteries heat up and if they fail can do quite a bit of damage. Theres a reason why they say to have them on a hard surface and not on your chest etc. And having it on a hard surface even if it heats up its unlikely to reach the combustion point of most materials.

anyhow if its under warranty or you think its a possible fault of the hardware contact apple. Steam isn't at fault nor are game developers if your PC,MAC etc burns up.

Get SMC Fan for Mac , You can set your fan to go crazy so it doesn't get as hot.

Steam isn't the problem. You're playing on a MacbookPro. It's not a gaming laptop, that's the problem. I'm not saying Macbooks CAN'T run some games, but that's not what they're designed for especially for longer gaming sessions( 1-2 hrs+, nonetheless falling asleep for a number of hours) Hope you have applecare, wouldn't go into all that detail with them though. If you don't have applecare there used to be a way to buy it afterwards from 3rd party places like Peachmac and then make a claim, but I doubt that works anymore. If not, you'll just have to go up to an apple store and see what they can offer you in help.

If you want to try this again after or if you resolve this, 1 don't fall asleep obviously, set an alarm or something and 2 go get a laptop designed for this with better hardware and vented better for airflow. A Macbook Pro is a pretty penny and very nice for what it is good at. I wouldn't risk breaking it over game playing though. Maybe reevaluate your choice/priorities like I said or get a PC laptop and a new Mac and have best of both worlds. Hopefully it is repairable though. Good luck

Thx guys . Will not use Steam or Mac for gameing anymore as it just became way to much of a hassle. Dont do this, dont do that, buy this, buy that... Damn, i just wanted to play some CiV on the long haul flights... Ill just stick to my ps4 so i guess my affair with steam ended here. Might b back when i completely loose my nerves with Apple... Which could b soon :)
