Video Game Addiction
Hello everyone! I'm choosing to write a paper on video game addiction and I wanted to get some opinons from the gaming community. I don't know a lot of people so I had to resort to a forum to ask the question: What do you think of Video Game Addiction? Is it a joke? Something to be concerned about or just an easy way to play the latest MMORPG all day every day? Is it preventable? Unavoidable?

It is truly difficult to decide whether or not addiction does exist as far as video gaming goes. I believe that some people who are already have addictive personalities could become addicted to gaming in the same way they are more likely to become addicted to cigarettes or alcohol. In most cases it is just a behavioural pattern encouraged by lack of social skills and the ability to function within society for whatever reasons, laziness, fear, shyness, all these can allow a person to become more involved with the vitual world of gaming rather than the outside world which generally takes much more effort. I game, but as a way of relieving stress after a particularly hard day at work, as I find it extremely relaxing, but it is not the only way I relax. It would appear that as society becomes more computer reliant, 'addiction to gaming' is certainly going to grow, as other leisure activities start to take a back seat, you only have to look at the advertisements at Christmas to see how consoles have taken over from board games and other social activities that were once commonplace. Society has to take some of the blame and the major game companies, who know how to get people 'hooked' as the Call of Duty franchise clearly indicates.

There is a strong difference between addiction to a substance which physically alters your brain and body, leading to craving and dependence on that substance for normal functioning, and a behavior or compulsive addiction. Some people are more prone to addictive behavior in general, whether chemical or behavioral, but they are not the same conditions.

Cigarettes and alcohol are two of the hardest addictions to break. Not only is it difficult to stop or go for a prolonged period without using them, stopping alcohol abuse can be lethal. Quitting gambling or gaming is not.

It's not an addiction if your doing something you love, i never feel like i am being forced to play video games, it's something i want to do and i feel that gaming is not an addiction except when you start to loose control of knowing the difference when you want to play video games, and when you NEED to play video games. Take World of Warcraft for example, having to stay up and do raids etc.

At the moment i want to play video games, even if it is for a rediculously long duration of time, i dont care, and none of us should too!! he main thing is as long as we're all happy there's no problem :)

This thread was quite old before the recent posts, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
