There is a strong difference between addiction to a substance which physically alters your brain and body, leading to craving and dependence on that substance for normal functioning, and a behavior or compulsive addiction. Some people are more prone to addictive behavior in general, whether chemical or behavioral, but they are not the same conditions.
Cigarettes and alcohol are two of the hardest addictions to break. Not only is it difficult to stop or go for a prolonged period without using them, stopping alcohol abuse can be lethal. Quitting gambling or gaming is not.
