I feel like every gamer should act like an adult. Or, at least, mature.

I know this is a weird comment, but I've met/seen some pretty mature 13-14 year olds on Xbox or Steam and such, but I've also seen some pretty damn immature 20-something year olds here as well. Honestly, I feel like some of our youth are becoming more mature because they interact with adults much more--over the internet, or gaming, for example.

I read a book set in 2007 about whether or not gaming is harmful or beneficial, (in a parent's perspective... btw I'm 18, not a parent, I just read it for a book report) and according to research, a lot of kids are becoming a lot more sociable, friendly, responsible, and mature because they interact and befriend older peers through gaming; whether that avenue be through mutually running a guild together, navigating through campaigns, etc. cooperation with different types of people is key.

Personally, I've been good around adults since I was young, because when I was little, we had a lot of my parent's friends come over. I became used to them, and, therefore, a bit more friendly and respectful with older peers. I still am. Older generations like me more than my own generation. Bleh.

Anywho, how do you feel about this? Obviously, I don't think that everyone needs to be stoic and business-like, no. Of course everyone can hang loose, have fun, joke around etc. but it would be nice if we could have a change from the raging, the "I slept with your mother" over CoD, etc etc.

I like 'immature' banter when I'm on coms, as long as it's with people I know. If I was on a random online server, which doesn't happen often, I don't tend to talk; I will banter back if addressed. I'm not a fan of being a 'grown up.' Be that in terms of what society says I should do or in terms of how I am. That doesn't mean that I think it's ok to be disrespectful to people, though. I just don't like it when people tell me I should have a kid at my age, or that I am to old to find fart jokes funny.

As I read that, the analogy that sprang to my mind was a filmmaker who refused to use recorded sound in his features because the visual actions of the actors should be sufficient to tell a complete story.

Not a perfect analogy, but not wholly irrelevant.

Maybe it's more like special effects? Not necessary, but does add something. I guess that's it. A movie doesn't need special effects, but adding them allows it to do more it couldn't do otherwise.

I suppose there's something to be said about that. I guess I find it more intellectually stimulating to convey my point without the use of emoticons.

Plus I find that emoticons tend to cheapen the jokes. Monty Python wouldn't be half as funny if they smiled at the end of every line right? Yeah jokes can ultimately be lost in translation that way but when it works its so much funnier.
