What will replace the mouse?
I think a display that can sense where your looking, very fast and accurate.

Left Blink = LMB
Right Blink = RMB

Hold one eye shut and move the other eye scroll.

2 Blinks yes, 1 Blink no, for those yes/no popups :P

What if you have a nervous tic?

Also, I kinda want to see what I'm looking at when I'm trying to read. Take a moment and open a book, and start twiching like a maniac. Lemme know how it goes, compared to just... reading with both eyes.

Now, replacing the mouse cursor with an eye tracker might be feasible, but you'd need something separate for command input. Either voice commands or hand gestures, maybe a glove. Maybe a sensor-pad that you hover your hand over but not actually touching something, which interprets your hand gestures.

I'd say finger jestures would be an alternative to using your computer, but it wouldn't replace the mouse entirely.
It could help you with scrolling pages, zooming, or editing photos.

If that replaces the mouse it will ruin PC gaming at the very least.

Wouldnt much like to browse with it either, I like to be able to read things while manipulating other things with my mouse.

Also I cant touch type, so would make anything which involves the keyboard impossible, for me at least.

That's been experimented with before, and it's kind of a dead end. Humans have been using their hands for thousands of years, so any interface is going to rely heavily on them for the ergonomic advantage alone.

I wouldn't say a "dead end", although I'm not saying it will revolutionize anything.
But, here's the just of what I was talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d6KuiuteIA

I think skiddy was refering to the eye jesture one.

Optical keyboards have been around for 20 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projection_keyboard

Finger tracking could easily be implemented..

Option B: Brain implant, already exists..

Option C: Super sensitive brainwave detection and analysis human interface device? (Maybe in the future)

Haha i think blinking like that to fire might cause some dizzyness.

I think the future will be something similar to a glove like in Minority Report. Something you can manipulate objects in 3D with that can give back some sort of response to your touch. While also giving you the full control the human hand can afford.

I doubt full body controllers will be popular unless they can construct one that is either simple to wear or a complete scanning device. In fact it would be nice if the hand device were some kind of wrist band that simply monitors your hand with thermal or some other form of scanning. It wouldn't have feedback but it would be simple and easy to use.

The only reason i think the mouse could ever be replaced is that eventually someone is going to make a really good VR game, then everyone will copy it, and VR will become cool again instead of some gimmicky thing.

Something like OmniTools in Mass Effect for a mouse replacement, maybe.

Would be a lot like just moving a pretend mouse (avoiding having to use flat surfaces to track the mouse movements i suppose)

A virtual representation of the Keyboard/Mouse would ultimately be the best way to go about it.

As has already been said, replacing the keyboard/mouse dynamic is actually very unlikely because it works so well, why would we need to replace it? The only reason substitutes should be developed are for handicapped people who may not be able to use a regular setup (i.e. eye sensors.. Just look at stephen Hawking)

Brain chips/external imaging devices would be my true ideal. The 'Accel World' Anime has a variant of such technology that would be incredibly useful and just plain cool for modern use. (others may have provided the same kind of technology but that's all i can think of off the top of my head atm.)

When some guy in the future asks on a forum how to set up his full motion body suit and then everyone calls him a noob for not using the brain stem controller.

It will just be mouse vs controller all over again :P

I hope we never get full body controllers. As a well endowed fat man, having to wear a skin-tight catsuit to play games doesnt sound appealing to me.
Michael Murphy 2012 年 9 月 14 日 上午 11:11
Um no, try playing a game that requires spamming LMB 3-5 times per second. Try playing osu! like that with your eyes, no way.

lol this made me laugh, but i think you need to make it 3 blinks and 2 blinks just on account that people blink naturally. it would be bad timing for a person to blink naturally during one of your said popups.

have you seen what some georgia tech guys have been trying to do with the kinect? making it read full on american sign language.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42419609/ns/technology_and_science-games/t/new-hack-lets-xbox-kinect-read-sign-language/#.UFN05I1lQdQ

i was in seattle with me pops during a medical convention and the hotel we were at had those microsoft tables in the lobby. (this was long before there was ever a kinect) but i noticed if you got your hand close enough to the table but didn't touch, it could still sense what you wanted it to do. of course i had to try some sign language, but not surpisingly it didn't work.
