Pop music is manufactured purely to be the top 40 song of the week by the record label. The "musicians" aren't particularly good, the lyrics are all written by the label for them and the singers more often then not can't sing.

Focus groups are used to determine what will sell the best, this removes all of the the art and creativity thus the end result has no heart or soul.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply I meant you in particular. I meant any person who says something similar to that is merely voicing their own opinions and preferences, and since all art - even that which is based purely on profit and hive-mind mentality - is subjective, then no one can say what is 'good' and what is 'bad' music. While I agree on your assessment that pop/top 40 is rather shallow and contrived, there are also likely to be some you enjoy among them. It helps if you try listening to a piece as a whole collection of sounds rather than as a catchy rhyming diatribe about whatever the singer is trying to preach. This is why I dislike rap - it doesn't seem to matter what the words are, it doesn't have the complex layering of sound that I prefer, such as trance music. It also has a 'rough' or 'hostile' sound to it much of the time to me. It makes me feel uncomfortable.
