infinitybound.net
There are much larger communities than these two sites, but I have found the more sophisticated writers tend to visit these two (depending on the room you choose). Infinitybound, as of late, has been somewhat inactive. Fateslabyrinth has a smaller (but more active) community, mainly due to the fact the users don't really advertise and neither do the owners. This place basically operates on word of mouth, if you're not a good writer, however, or a newbie, you'll probably be ignored for the most part. It can feel a little "cliquey" to the new person, but the fact is, is that people on FL just don't want to waste time on someone they don't want to roleplay with. It's very much a "prove yourself" environment. If you display some skill as a writer, whose posts are coherent and not overly short (a good post is typically between 2-3 paragraphs) then you won't have any problems finding roleplay partners.
I don't know why the guy compared chat roleplay to casual video games, this man has clearly never chat room roleplayed. The length of the posts tend to be the same as forum roleplay, unless the writers in question are horrible. I can tell you as someone who has been in the roleplay chat scene for over a decade that it is easily the best option for written roleplay. Forum roleplay is nice, but takes far too long to get anything done. If you're on a really tight schedule without much down time for creative writing with a partner, then forum RP is for you. Otherwise, stick with the chat rooms, they're generally better if you're interested in a seeing a story develop with a beginning, middle and end.
Not to mention the sites above were coded for the specific intent of hosting roleplay chat rooms, thus, it has many more features than you typically find on chat rooms. There are many other sites that use this design, like worldbroadcastingsystem.net, sanguinemdraconis.net, whisperingrealmschat.net/, just to name a few.
Sorry for the thread necro. Hopefully someone who finds this information relevant will see it.
If anyone needs help getting into this style of roleplay, I will lend you a hand. Feel free to add me on Steam, just make sure you note why you are adding me to your friends list when you do. Also, if you see me in a game please don't spam me with messages. I don't mind answering the odd question or two while I play, but I really hate being interrupted when I'm really immersed in what I'm doing.
Edit: I guess I should note that most of the roleplay I do is set in comicbook universes (DC and/or Marvel) and Fantasy/Historically inspired medieval settings (either original or ASOIAF). Although my friend and I were talking about starting up a Mass Effect centred one, but who knows if we'll get around to it.
