A good competitive FPS?
I've played a lot of Tribes and Quake, and some Unreal. I'm not too much into CS. Don't even mention CoD or BF (they're not competitive!).

I'm looking for something new and fresh, and it doesn't have to be a old school shooter (not that they're really around anymore), so what would you recommend?

Try Team Fortress 2?
It's free to play now and isn't a realistic game like CoD or BF; it's more "unique" like the other games you mentioned.
It has a growing competitive community that I think is worth getting into.
Just a thought.

Forgot to mention that I've played that already :S

I know you said you're not into CS but CS:GO has been so much more fun for me than previous counter strike games. The competetive mode really gives that on the edge feeling that I feel is missing from plenty Shooters.

I'd say give it a try next time it's $5

I already own it (and have for ages).

I've played a lot of BF and I'm the first to admit that it is not in fact competitive. Anyway that's beside the point, please stay on topic... I just want a game to play ;)

A game can be competitive depending on whether there's a scene for competitive play. For example BF 8 v 8, but I will just list FPS that aren't already listed.

I believe the game is Shootmania, apparently (never played) it's a small 3? 5? person game and you use your own skills to win, it's all twitch shooting and takes skills to win each round.

Then there's NS2, team based game, public games are a mess but if you join in clans for competitive play, then it gets extremely strategic, most strategic FPS I've played.

Rising storm is the last one, I played public for a bit and it was decent, one hit kill, brutal mechanics. Not competitive, just a decent shooter.

I am unsure with Arma, never tried apparently it's a great game from some.

If you're looking for a primarily compeitive game, try Natural Selection 2. The developers well and truly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up for everyone who isn't playing small team compeitive, but if that's what you're looking for, it may fit your needs.

Unfortunately, it's now a truly terrible game for anyone who isn't looking for extremely compeitive small team play. Sad how some developers actively try to destroy their own products.

Be aware though that hacking is a bit of a problem in the game as the developers haven't been providing VAC with hacks to look for. A few well known hackers got broadcasted to Youtube obviously hacking in April and they still haven't gotten banned.

Shootmania was kinda fun, but it felt really stale as an result of having only 4 weapons. And almost nobody play it anymore.

NS2 runs horribly on my computer and you've really got to have a proper team for it to be fun.

I've never liked Red Orchestra, it's just so slow and dull.

Arma is buggy as hell, and like RO it has a pace to it that I don't like.
