Where do you stand on displaying your real name on Steam?
Would you rather people just know your Steam name and only your Steam name? Is putting up your real name too personal? I display my real name to show that I'm actually a real human being and not some troll -- a genuine person, though I rather be referred to as Taken or Takendown. Should you refer to me by my first name, that's also no problem at all.

What are your thoughts? :SocialPolicy:

I think to many people have the wrong inpression that in RL they are ever anonymous. If you think your are what's stopping you from going into any bank and walking out with all the money? Meybe baceuse in RL people do not have to know your name (which somone already notice is not uniqe anyway) to identify you. Other people identify you by the way you look (not only face but appearance overall), your voice, they way you express yourself (accent, words you use), the way you move or smell. You can be easily identified by fingerprints or DNA..
The thing is, in RL on the street or in the shop you are NEVER anonymous.
Anonimity is a myth, and the fight to retain what we never had in the first plase is simply speaking silly.

Providing your name and surname in the internet is actually giving people a lot less information about yourself then they get just by being able to see you on the other side of the street. Example? John Smith. Facbook him, how meny of him is out there?
And yet naive people will clim it is a violation of their privacy...
Please, don't fallow the global paranoia.
you have more chance of finding out who i am through scouring facebook for the correct James than you do in meeting me in person. therefore am i not anonymous to you?

and if i did happen to walk past you, how would you know who i was, and how would i know who you were.
sure, you will have seen me, but you will not know you had, therefore i am still anonymous to you.

it is like walking around with a name tag all the time in real life...; how many people here are willing to do that?
Think about it that way; so many people on facebook and site like it, give away so much information.
mèmz 2013 年 8 月 4 日 上午 6:34
you are more likely to meet me on the street and know who i am if i gave you my last name, no? you could look up my facebook and then know what i look like, so that if you do walk past me, you would know you had, so please dont tell me anonymity is a myth

You compare two diferent levels of interaction. Passing by on the streat is hardly comparable to actively serch for somone on the web. I would probably never register you just walking buy, but If I were not talking to you in here I would never know you exist, regardles of wheter you have provided your RL name or nick. We never got into interaction thats why my brain simply chosen to forget about you.
If you came into interaction with somone in RL (not just occupy same space) you stop being anonymous to that person. This is a fact people seem to ignore.

no one is ignoring that, but to become completely unanonymous to a person, you have to make that choice, if you met me in person, you would know what i look like, you would know that my name is james, now you cannot take that information and find out where my house is, without following me, so even in that circumstance, some aspect of me is anonymous to you.

which means that anonymity cannot be a myth.

i ask you now, what am i thinking?
i would ask you when i met you, what am i thinking?
neither time will you be able to tell me, my thoughts are anonymous to you, unless i tell you them.

Well in the internet you also have to make the choice. You have to register (choice 1) you have to comment something (choice 2). It is actually a lot less invasive then in RL, because you can't passivly become involved in interaction. In RL you can, somone may cause an accident you are involved in and vila, you are no longer anonymous. No accidents in here.
Problem is that people choose to make a lot of interactions in the internet they would not do, if their name was next to it. People abuse that pseudo aninimity internet gives.

E.g.? Steam, who force you to make accont? Who force you to make it public? Who force you to comment? This is all your choice. In RL you can make exactly same decision.
If you decide to become a politician, actor, singer, comedian, policeman, firefigter, you chose to "display" your name next to everything you do. This is all matter of choce and it is same for internet and RL.

I'm sorry but what that have to do with anything? I think you don't really understand what anonimity means ;/

i completely agree with what you just said, but it seems that your previous posts were alluding to something else, my opinion is, that the person should have the choice, and that i feel no need to hide my first name from you, i also believe that i should hide my last name from you, not for paranoia, just that if i wanted you to know me and see my facebook, i would have made that choice rather than an anonymous person getting those details.

I'm just fine displaying my real name.

Yes, the name on my profile IS my real name.

Both of your views are very interesting. I'd have to agree with Xelosu though. Names are personal, indeed, but you really aren't giving too much away despite how dangerous the internet is at the moment. Sure, you could do a search of my name and possibly find pages linked to that but in all honesty, I have nothing to hide. I'm a person and I have an identity just like everyone else does. I find it more satisfying when people have their real names up for the simple fact that it shows that the person I see before me is genuine and exists. I can't really go off of an avatar with just a gamername. For all I know they could be someone I would rather not have any contact with.

It takes guts to put your name up and reveal that you are real. By real, I mean someone with the sole purpose of being a part of the community, unlike trolls etc.

What are your reasons for doing so? I'd like to hear them due to the wide range of emotions and feelings regarding the subject already been displayed in this thread.

I prefer to go by my username but I don't mind being called by my first name.

Last name's going a little too far, no way I'd display that on Steam. First name's fine though.
mèmz 2013 年 8 月 4 日 上午 8:06
to rephrase my point, i believe that everyone is allowed to withhold information as they please,
i feel no threat in telling you my first name. but my last name, the same as many people, is not that common, you likely will only find one of me with that combination living in the area i give on steam, that is too personal, if i told you a simple string of x letters now, you could find out where i went to school, what i look like, how old i am, what i do for a living, who my family members are, my interests. simply because you knew my full name.

however if i wished to tell you, then i would.

it is also a case of those people who may just be looking to add friends, if i gave you that information, you may add me on a social networking site, while i don't have to accept obviously, i would rather not deal with the hassles.
Xelosu 2013 年 8 月 4 日 上午 11:23
Hate to bring it to you but you are not anonymous on the street, that's an illusion. Other people choose to ignore you untill you keep doing ordianary things. People often confuse this with being anonymous. Try doing anything extraordinary on the street and that illusion will pop like a balloon.
Example? Easy, the insitution of witness, somone that saw you and can identify you. Worth mentioning that the accuracy of such identification is strong enough for court to find you guilty.

PS. I see no reason to post my name, as it is avalible in my profile..

I have no issues with people seeing my real name. If someone really wanted to know everything about me for reasons that should make me worried, they'll go through a ♥♥♥♥-ton of effort to find out more than I actually do post.
