Sandbox Space-Sim?
I've been looking for an open world, sandbox space-sim. One of my favorite all-time games when I was a kid was StarFlight for Sega Genesis. It was revolutionary and way ahead of it's time. It was maybe the first sandbox game ever and I could explore the universe which felt infinite, interact with alien races and dictate who to befriend and who to fight, enter solar systems and find planets that I was able to land on so I could mine valuable resources to sell and build with, etc. It was awesome in 1991. Every space-sim I look into now is either to story driven or focuses only on space flight and not on planet exploration or the opposite. I've been looking at these 3 games for a while.

Star Citizen: The biggest blockbuster of the 3 from the creator of Wing Commander. Looks awesome but I do not know if I will be able to land on different planets and explore.

Infinite Space: Sea of Stars: I backed this on Kickstarter so I will be getting it for only $10. It looks great as well but once again my concern is, can I actually explore the planets in the planets in the solar systems?

And last.. Infinite Pixels: This has what I'm looking for. Space exploration with the ability to seek out new planets, land on them and set up camp while mining asteroids, fighting or co-oping with local alien species all tied together with that fun, minecraft-style survival voxel spin BUT I can't help but look at the way this game looks right now and become bored already. The planets look completely lifeless. Like each is a desert but just a different color desert from the last one.

If you come across any game that fits my "wanted" description, send it my way. I can't believe you didn't read all of this and just skipped to the end.. how dare you.

Freelancer comes to mind. Its a bit older, but you can explor a lot and the story is very well done.
And of course the X-series. Its a bit more complex though. Not everyones taste.
But both dont have planet exploration :/

I would keep my eye on Elite: Dangerous. http://elite.frontier.co.uk/
Humm....you could take a look at Starmade. It's in Alpha right now and it's kind of a mix between Star Citizen and Minecraft.

Starmade website: http://star-made.org/

Maybe it's not what you are looking for but, maybe yes.
I would have to recommend the X series of games above all, it takes time to learn the mechanics but the game world is massive, I've sunk hundreds of hours into it without exploring half the game world.
Appreciate the info. I'm going to look into each suggestion.

As a matter of fact, this may be just what I am looking for. Thank you very much.

Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters. Its also freeware because some people ported it from the 3DO version.

Elite was awesome - killed days of time back on my atari.. right after I upgraded to 1mb of RAM..

have you tried FTL? is kind of like a space simulator
If you are thinking about going into the X Series franchise I suggest you wait for X Rebirth which is comming out this year I believe. It is supposed to be much better, and have support which will make the learning curve much better.

Lot of talk about the X series. I think I'll def check out Rebirth.
Sorry for the rather late reply, but it sounds like the upcoming "No Man's Sky" will be your cup of tea..
