I run into girls pretty often. In WoW and other games, I think the percentage is probably higher than in FPS's.... but I have quite a few other girls on my friends list who play on a regular basis.

but on the upside lots of free games comes with being a girl on here....
That really is just kind of an urban myth. Maybe the ones that literally beg and bat their eye-lashes for it can get "lots" of free games, but beyond that it really happens only very rarely.

haha, I've had myst on my "want" list since it came out. I can't even convince my husband to buy it for me. LOL Being a girl doesn't get me much.... well, that's not totally true. My hubby did get me a puppy for my birthday. ^.^

The thing about women and men cooking is that women for the most part cook because they were raised to think that is what they should do. As far as I have seen even the most progressive parents still instill this notion into their girls that they should know how to cook.

In other words women don't cook because they want or like to, they often cook because they feel as if they should. The men that can cook on the other hand, do it because they like it, it's a passion or a hobby.

Not saying this is the case with every man and woman of course, but that's how I see it. So I am not surprised that these days it's more common to find a guy who cooks regularly. I mean everyone prefers to do the things they like instead of doing things they feel are somehow forced upon them.
Exactly. Nearly everything everyone does is tied to social inheritance (or indoctrination, if you will). We do, feel and think what we learn from the people we trust and love during our childhood. Humans learn from, and form opinions of, what they see others do around them.

Some of the more archaic social traditions, such as women are supposed to be the home maker and the man is supposed to be the mechanic, can be very hard to break the mold of because society as a whole is so instilled in those "ideals", no matter how little sense it actually makes when you really think about it.

And so whenever someone breaks the mold and does the opposite of what tradition dictates - like a girl being a car mechanic or race driver, or a guy being a hairdresser or flight attendant, people will turn heads and find it funny, weird, intriguing, quirky, inappropriate and whatnot.

I believe the same (still) goes for girls who are into gaming, and it's why we have these types of threads time and time again. It's kind of like the forbidden fruit phenomenon: "Omg, she's not supposed to do that! But she does it anyway.. how fascinating." It gets made into something special because social inheritance has taught us that it is unusual, even though it really isn't.

Oh and on a serious note: Gurls don't exist! :headcrab:

I agree - my husband went to culinary arts school, and while he only cooks for our family now - he's a way better cook than I ever will be. Around our household, I clean, but I'm not very domestic-y. I'm the computer/electronics expert. He doesn't really play games.

Sadly no, tons of people on my list are girls (or pose as women, it doesn't really matter to me) and say "oh x just came out wish i could get it" then there are comments under it saying, "sure, i'l get x for you", and then they own it. It happens quite a bit.

but yes, it's a sort of passive aggressive begging.

Exactly! :p2chell:

It really is just a myth for the most part. I've had 6 games gifted without asking for them in the now almost 3 years on steam, 2 of which were from friends who had bought a bundle and already had one of the games included. And just for the record, I declined the other 4 randomly gifted ones because I'm just really uncomfortable with accepting stuff in that fashion.

Also puppy > games :tbphappy:

A lot of the women..no..probably all of the women where I study play COD, so FPS percentages by me for that are pretty high.

Yeah that's what I mean - begging for it, even if only passively, is a different matter. I find it kind of pathetic and would feel ashamed to lower myself to such standards. If I want something, I want to earn it myself, not just flutter eyelids and make puppy eyes until someone buys it with ulterior motives and then expects "something" in return.

Haha, I've had steam for 9+ years, and I don't think any of my games have been gifted. I've had a few people send me invites for the trial stuff - i.e. when it's a free play weekend or something....

but the actual game? Not so much. ^.^

Now, I have allowed people to pay for my ESEA when they wanted me to play with them because I don't like to play on ESEA very much. ^.^ (mostly because of losing karma when my internet drops me, and not allowing me to reconnect because someone else ninja's my spot in the 15 seconds it takes for them to allow the reconnect.)

I must be doing it wrong.....

Although, I will say, I almost *never* get hit on when I play. Usually, most of the comments I get are "fat wh*re" and other sexist comments.... and "you are a girl, so you must cheat." comments. LOL

Haha yup, that is before they find out you're a girl ofc and just assume you're a guy (because, y'know, girls don't exist etc.) and just run you through their repetiore of insults they use on each other all day long xD

Weeeell nah it's not actually that bad tbh, by far most guys don't seem to care either way and don't make a deal out of it at all even when they find out your gender. And some really are just genuinely nice about it. And people definitely seem to be getting more tolerant about girls in games nowadays, which really is a breath of fresh air

haha - I don't think i play with very many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ most of the time. Most of the people I play with hold me to the same expectations as they do everyone else, and call me on my ♥♥♥♥, good or bad just like they do any of their guy friends.

I occasionally get a bad egg, but I think the majority of people who play games tend to be pretty civil people if you think of it as a bigger picture. You tend to notice the one or two who stick out more than you do the 20-30 in a row you played with, who caused zero problems, and had no rage issues, or bad manners.

Now.... if my buddies are drinking... then I might get some lewd comments, but they hit on each other as much as they do me, so I think it's the alcohol factor, more than the gender factor. LOL

Personally if i were a woman on steam I would not ID myself as one, way too many people harassing them....but on the upside lots of free games comes with being a girl on here....

Guys...please stop being ♥♥♥♥♥ to them, also stop being super nice to them, treat them like how you would treat any other steam user. They are 50+- of the population, not a unicorn or some sort of sorcery. :pinkheart:

EDIT TO STAY ON TOPIC - lots of women play games.

Mikuru -

To take this to the next level...

If I were a woman/girl/whatever and I played games on Steam, I would Identify myself as one every chance I got. Think about it. On the other hand I agree with you completely regarding how we guys should treat them, and others. Or US.

Vampyre -

People are people no matter where you go. And tolerance is not really all it is chalked up to be. To me, "acceptance, no matter what" is better. If I am an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, treat me as such, and maybe, just maybe, have the compassion to show me another way, Up to you.

Emma -

Thanks. Hope yours is happy too.
