Piracy won't have caused this to happen. People drifted to F2P games as they started appearing and most MMOs don't have enough compelling content to keep them paying month after month to play it. People play through the main quest line quickly, maybe max out their character if they like then get bored and move onto other things.
F2P came along with a few high quality games that are updated frequently with new content and the ability to pay for certain items if you want and took a huge chunk of the MMO playerbase.

It isn't, it lost 14% of its player base between January and March according to some reports.
I put full blame on TESO for this xD
It could be the beta for Dragon's Prophet or EQ Next. Both supposedly hosted by SOE. I know alot of players are looking forward to EQ Next however, DP is gaining a good reputation at least right now and alot of players have decided to make DP their only MMO.
