or if you want to go outside of steam offered games, Solium Infernum is an awesome asynchronous turn based strategy/diplomacy game (http://www.crypticcomet.com/games/SI/Solium_Infernum.html)
or you can always go with the classic diplomacy game which is probably the oldest asynchronous turn based game there is. theres some web implementations such as (http://webdiplomacy.net/) although this game can lead to bad feelings between friends as it is all about lying and backstabbing at critical moments.
and although it is not available yet, this one looks very nice (and will allow asynchronous multiplayer):

Solium infernum and dominions 3 are both pbem
http://www.crypticcomet.com/ for solium infernum
http://www.dominions3.com/ for dominions
there are web sites that allow you to play board games that way as well.
Actually now I think about I'm going to reinstall Alpha Centari. Only civ game where a nuke could turn a mountain into a small lake.
