Doom and Quake. The Bethesda remasters range from okay to blah and are mostly for console players who can't load a source port.
The original Tomb Raider series (1-5. Nobody likes 6, but they're remastering it anyway). The 1st reboot trilogy suffered from terrible controls, but was otherwise okay. The current reboot games are Tomb Raider in name only.
Mario, Zelda and Metroid, of course. Mario peaked with 1-3 and World, IMO. The SNES Allstars versions and GBA versions are equally good.
Every Zelda is worth playing, including 2. Don't be a wimp and try to use guides.
For Metroid, AM2R is the definitive way to play Metroid 2.
All Final Fantasy, of course. The recent Pixel Remasters are nice, but cut out too much content. Play the GBA or PSP versions.
And don't skip the canon CGI movies and series (Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta, Infinite Darkness and Death Island). Ignore the live action crap.
People act like Kojima is the #1 auteur, but Warren Spector is easily his equal. Also, System Shock 1 and 2. I can't get over people calling Bioshock a 'spiritual successor' to SS. I tried to get into Bioshock, but it was just BORING.
Not quite 20 years old but close enough.
Read the book first. Ignore the movie.
Edit: Also the old Metroid games, and Star Fox games.
